A Very Good Hands-On Dramatic Exercise for AP Students

The "Life of Galileo" made an excellent dramatic presentation for my AP Modern Euro History course to read. I would only advise that students take several roles (but be careful their multiple personas don't appear together in the same scene) because of the large cast of characters and that a teacher select only certain scenes from the play due to its length. The scenes with Cardinal Barberini make especially good read-aloud dramatizations.

Good job, Brecht

It's always refreshing to see an artist who does the hard work necessary to get the science right. Brecht does not give us a hagiography or a hatchet job on Galileo; he is more interested in the truth. Unfortunately, this would probably be difficult to present for an American audience, because it has not been dumbed down to short sentences and sound bites. Which makes it that much better, in my book.

The plot, though fictionalized, resembles the basic outline of Galileo's life - Galileo used a new invention, the telescope, to empirically validate the Copernican model of the solar system. The universe doesn't actually revolve around the Earth, the Earth is just another planet that revolves around the Sun. Members of the clericy object to this. Some don't accept it since it contradicts their reading of the bible, others accept it but don't want the people to know because it will undermine their understanding of the world.

If the basic structure of the universe isn't they way they've been told, what else might be different? Could people live differently? Is the rule of the Church, Kings, not divinely ruled either? These are just a couple of the conundrums the play gives you to think about and always with both sides making very strong cases.

It sounds a little didactic put this way but it's an entertaining play. Galileo is portrayed as an Earthy character. He likes good food and being able to do as he pleases.

Aside from Galileo the other characters are also very well drawn, his daughter Virginia, his pupil Andrea, Cosimo De Medici, Cardinal Barberini.

All in all it's a interesting read with a lot of food for thought. Brecht gives you both drama and ideas and he does so quite suavely. Highly recommended.

Expensive to buy. Does not contain everything, like more advanced topics of reliability design, such as Monte Carlo, Fault Tree, Structural Reliability etc etc. Has good amount of examples.

Highly Acclaimed

The only review which touched upon what makes this work significant gave it unecessarily critical remarks. This lexicon was met with critical acclaim by scholars of the New Testament. It broke away from the alphabatized pattern of lexicons and used semantic domains. Semantic domains allow one to see all the words available to convey an idea or object ect. and compare the nuances and differences between options. The second significant contriubtion lay in the use of actual definitions instead of glosses. Glosses had dominated NT lexicography since the Complutensian Polyglot, glosses being one word equivalents. It should be noted Louw and Nida did not do their own lexicographical research for this dictionary (on a large scale anyway). They basically used Barclay Newman's little dictionary, authorized by the United Bible Society to accompany its Greek New Testament, as their lexical semanitic foundation. Louw and Nida created lengthy definitions from Barclay's glosses. The authors had in view Bible translators around the world and the difficulty of translating ideas and concepts found in the Bible in to other cultures and languages. You can see this clearly in the definitions for "God". So basically this lexicon does for Greek what has been done for English and other modern languages, namely providing actual definitions instead of synonyms. Nida was a proponent of thought for thought translations, which judging by one of the previous reviews is still controversial. He challenged the paradigm which says the Bible should be translated literally and then the preachers and teachers should make it intelligible to the masses. I refer to Nida because I am familiar with his scholarship. I do not feel comfortable speaking for Louw. Nida was a pioneer and utilized modern linguistics to the benefit of the community of New Testament students. I thought it needed to be said, exactly what this work IS and why it is significant. This work is not a replacement to Bauer-Danker but a great compliment.

Outstanding study aid

In my study of Greek, I use two main lexicon aids: BDAG and Louw & Nida.

BDAG serves as a better source of word definition and for all uses of the word in the Bible and other literature, but Louw & Nida serves as a superb, current pointer to synonyms and antonyms. This is not the only use for this lexicon, but this is the way I use it. It is superb for word study, as a single English word may be translated from many Greek words that have different meanings. For instance, Louw & Nida has led me to over 30 words translated as 'argue', 'disagree', 'strife' and 'struggle.'

Louw & Nida must be used with the index. Without the index, it will be virtually impossible to find any word you are seeking, as they are organized according to semantic domains. The index has a Greek index, Scripture index, and topical index. These are extremely helpful in word studies, as they point to so many words and their general use.

The introduction of Louw & Nida states that this is not a traditional lexicon, but is intended to help in translation. It provides some interesting aids in this sort of definition that is not always given in BDAG. The definitions are based on current scholarship, but only list one or two instances of use in Scripture, whereas BDAG gives every instance.

About the Author
William Earl Maxwell is a professor emeritus at San Antonio College, where he has taught courses in U.S. and Texas government since 1971. Throughout his career Maxwell has focused on innovative teaching techniques and improving the teaching and learning environments for students. As part of that effort, in 1975 Maxwell co-authored UNDERSTANDING TEXAS POLITICS, his first text on Texas government. He also co-authored such texts as POLITICS IN TEXAS and THE CHALLENGE OF TEXAS POLITICS: TEXT WITH READINGS. He completed his undergraduate and graduate work at Sam Houston State University.

A thirty-five year veteran instructor of political science, Ernest Crain specializes in political party competition, comparative state politics, and Texas public policy. Crain co-authored UNDERSTANDING TEXAS POLITICS, POLITICS IN TEXAS, THE CHALLENGE OF TEXAS POLITICS, and four editions of INTRODUCTION TO TEXAS POLITICS. Crain received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Texas in Austin.

Mark P. Jones is the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy's Fellow in Political Science, the Joseph D. Jamail Chair in Latin American Studies, and the Chair of the Department of Political Science at Rice University. Jones is a frequent commentator on Texas politics in the state and national media, and his research on the Texas Legislature is widely cited by media outlets and political campaigns. Jones received his B.A. from Tulane University and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

M. Lynn Davis is a full professor of Government at El Paso Community College. Her specialties include political theory, communication, and process. She has written articles on political discourse and the primary/caucus debate and has edited several textbooks. She currently serves as Government Faculty Coordinator and teaches and mentors other faculty in Blackboard Software. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Davis earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Christopher Wlezien is Hogg Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. Previously a professor of political science at Temple University, Dr. Wlezien has published in several political science journals, has edited THE FUTURE OF ELECTIONS STUDIES and BRITAIN VOTES, and was founding co-editor of the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion, and Parties. His research interests include developing a "thermostatic" model of public opinion and policy and examining the interrelationships between preferences for spending and budgetary policy in various domains, and the evolution of voter preferences over the election cycle. A past president of the SWPSA, Dr. Wlezien received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.

A book for the professional bread baker.

This book is an excelient book for both professional and student bakers. Not only does the book introduce the basics of bread baking, it also goes into the chemistry aspects of baking. This wonderful book offers a number of fasinating pictures that show many diffrent folds, rolls and techniques of developing dough. I highly recomend this book for someone who is interested in becoming a professional baker like myself.

Professional Bread Baker Master Class

If you are a seasoned bread baker, manager or owner of a small neighborhood bakery, this book is a must-have. It has hard to find information that will be extremely useful to you. This book is a valuable reference for professionals.

The first 30 pages is formal information on bread making techniques and ingredients in the professional bakery (e.g. base temperature calculations).

It has almost 50 recipes for specialty and flavored bread. These are extremely profitable, as they represent bread you can charge more for. If you are already doing standard breads, you should be able to do all the breads in this section without any additional difficulty. In addition, they will allow you to present good variety to your customers. The recipes are geared for about a dozen loaves, just about right for a neighborhood bakery.

It presents about 2 dozen different bread shapes that you can mostly apply to breads you are already making.

The second half of the book is devoted to bread sculpture, for those who feel artistic or who need a start for a professional competition.

A phenomenal book!

This book is absolutely amazing, although it is geared towards the professional baker. There are great photographs of some of the decorative pieces, as well as helpful charts and tables. There are recipes for a number of unusual breads, as well as how to form animals, letters, woven bread baskets, wagons, and many other unusual and impressive breads. This is a great book for anyone interested in the nitty-gritty on bread-making and bread-shaping.

Grade 4-6-This collection of 23 stories and poems includes selections by Ray Bradbury, Patricia McKissack, Edward Gorey, Bram Stoker, William Sleator, Alvin Schwartz, Jack Prelutsky, Shel Silverstein, and others. Among the illustrators represented are Brian Pinkney, Quentin Blake, Gahan Wilson, and Peter Horvath. While all of the stories are available elsewhere, some of the best are found in more obscure sources. Having them in one volume, with each tale introduced by Stine, makes this a good choice for most collections. The selections read aloud well and are short enough to read in several minutes. The more terrifying selections are juxtaposed with those that are funny, providing some comic relief. Children who enjoyed Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (1981) and More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (1984, both HarperCollins) will want to add this title to their reading lists. The pen-and-ink and charcoal illustrations visually clue readers as to how each tale ranks on the "scary barometer." The grizzly selections have very dark pictures while the more lighthearted ones have clean, clear strokes and more white space on the page. This is an obvious choice for children who love a good scare from time to time.

A Wickedly Delicious Brew

On the threshold of R.L. Stine's favorite holiday, Halloween, he's come out with a wonderful new book that is like a witches brew with multiple ingredients. The main ingredient in BEWARE is 'scary'. Added to the mix of scary stories, are some funny ones, tantalizing poems, a horror-comic, spooky illustrations, and like a cherry-on-top of an ice cream sundae, are R.L. Stine's intriguing introductions. I really liked reading an assortment of thrilling stories, R.L. Stine's favorites by different authors,the two he wrote himself, and two he retold. The scary ones definitely gave me chills. I now have a new appreciation for rats, ferris wheels, halloween costumes, elevators, witches, ghosts, and all kinds of creatures that can surface from one's imagination. Everyone will have their own favorites...Another cool thing are the spiders and cobwebs that trickle down each page while you read...This is a great book for both children and adults who like twists and thrills.

Delightfully Scary!

The perfect collection of scary stories. My grandson and I cuddle in a large chair with the lights turned down. I read each story with character voices which he loves. There's not a boring story in the bunch. We have a wonderful time.

I would also recommend Scary Stories: The complete 3-Book Collection by Alvin Schwartz.

Great Book!

My 10 yr old 5th grader is reading this book now. Every night before bed we turn the lights off and get a flashlight to read the spooky stories. We read the story about the rats last night. I am shocked he was able to sleep with the lights off! LOL We are both enjoying the book very much! I think my son likes that it's short stories. He feels like he's accomplished something when we finish a story and he can easily recap in his reading journal for school.

Growing up, Rick Osborne really liked Superman. Superman did what was right, he did cool things that other people couldn’t do, and he never quit. The Bible is full of great Superman-type stories where God helps good guys battle evil guys with his awesome supernatural help. By telling these stories, Rick loves to help boys see the real-life superhero that God wants each of them to be. Rick lives with his family up north in Canada, closer to where Superman built his fortress.

Jim Griffin, illustrator and award-winning artist, studied at the renowned Pratt Institute. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions and can be found in prestigious private collections.

One of the keys to Christmas is generosity, and "The Legend of the Christmas Stocking" by Rick Osborne is a great way to emphasize this with our children.

In this children's adaptation of the bestselling adult's book of the same title, we're taken back to Victorian times when a young boy named Peter is anxiously awaiting the return of his father's ship. He's also anxiously awaiting the day he can purchase a fine model of that ship, with money he's earned selling newspapers. But Uncle Jim asks: "What if your dad doesn't get back by Christmas? Would you be willing to use the money you saved to buy presents for your family instead?" Peter's is the only available money for Christmas presents, but Peter can't bear the thought of not getting his much longed for model. Can he really sacrifice his own wants for that of his sisters'?

Then Pastor Spring preaches a sermon on giving, telling his congregation the story of St. Nicholas, who knew three young women who could not afford a dowry, and therefore would never be able to marry. Secretly, he tossed bags of gold through two of their windows, ensuring the girls a more pleasant future. With the last girl, the gold lands in her stocking, which has been hung over the fireplace to dry. Pastor Spring says:

"Nicholas served God. He knew that God gave us Jesus, even though we didn't deserve him. When we give, it shows God's love."

Hearing this, Peter asks God to help him be more giving. On Christmas morning, his sisters find gifts in their Christmas stockings, and just as his mother opens the present Peter has given her, Peter's father bursts through the door and presents Peter with the model ship he's so wanted.

What I Like: Children will recognize themselves in this story's protagonist; Peter struggles with his desire to give and his own selfishness, just as most of us do. It's also nice that this book gives a peek at the story of the real Santa Claus. The illustrations by Jim Griffin are beautiful - realistic, compelling, and detailed.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

This is such a sweet, classic book with a wonderful lesson weaved throughout it. It blends fiction and history together seemlessly and provides children with a better understanding of what Christmas really means.

Sharing Christmas Stories

I sent this book to my grandchildren a couple of states away. It's a Christmas ritual that I send several Christmas books for them..it's more fun for me than for them I think. I got raving reviews from all of them. The children are 6,4,and 2. They wanted mommy and daddy to read it over and over again. I was so pleased they enjoyed it so much!

About the Author

Karen Katz has written and illustrated many books for children, including The Colors of Us, Can You Say Peace?, My First Kwanzaa, Counting Kisses, and Where Is Baby's Belly Button? Long inspired by folk art from around the world, she wrote her first book, Over the Moon, when she and her husband adopted their daughter from Guatemala, and she wanted to tell the story of welcoming Lena into their lives. Katz loves to paint and experiment with texture, color, collage and pattern. Besides an author and illustrator, she has been a costume designer, quilt maker, fabric artist and graphic designer. Katz and her family divide their time between New York City and Saugerties, New York.

Beautiful and Accurate Book

I was so psyched when I found out that one of my kid's favorite authors had done a book on Ramadan. (Thank you Karen Katz!) I was even more excited when I received the book. The illustrations are wonderful and whimsical. Ms. Katz has done an excellent job portraying life for a typical Muslim child. I especially enjoyed how she represented how multicultural a typical mosque in the US is. That's one of the wonderful things about being Muslim in the US--you are reminded every day that Muslims are not just of Arab origin. :) I know this will become a family favorite. Too bad it isn't on sturdy board stock like our other favorite Katz books. :)

Great for little kids

My son received this book as a gift during Ramadan, when he was only 2 years old. He'd been watching his parents fast, so it was a great way to explain what was happening, and to relate with our family. He loved it so much and it helped him understand in better detail what we were doing. I liked it so much I bought a copy for his two cousins, one 3 years old and one 7 years old. They liked it enough to take it to school with them - and it helped their friends understand what Ramadan was all about.

My son particularly liked the part about eating dates, eating while sitting on the floor, and praying in the mosque.

Perfectly written!

My sister gave this to me when I was pregnant with my first child. We would periodically read it to him during Ramadan and liked the book. Recently however he has begun to request it at both nap time and bed time. Not only has it helped him to recognize different terms like mosque and pray, he loves the fact that the family has a little boy and a little girl (I am pregnant with #2, who just happens to e a girl). He ADORES this book and I could not recommend it enough!!!

My other favorite thing is that the book uses the typical terms used within the religion AND includes pronunciations. This is so helpful for those who would like to read the book who are new to the religion of Islam or are reading to broaden their knowledge of religions and are not familiar with the Arabic terms (i.e. suhoor, Eid Mubarak, etc). Good job Karen Katz!
