Up to now double-skin facades have been used mainly for large buildings such as the debis headquarters on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. They can be used, however, with equal success for smaller buildings as a means of reducing the ingress of external noise and improving ventilation.

About the Author
The Authors: Eberhard Oesterle is managing partner of the neginerring office DS-Plan. He works as an engineering consultant specializing in the energy optimization of buildings. He is the author of numerous publications and holds an honorary professorship at the University of Stuttgart.

Rolf-Dieter Lieb is an engineering consultant specializing ub aerophysics and building physics as well as in energy management at DS-Plan.

Martin Lutz is an architect and managing partner at DS-Plan. He has designed several new facade developments.

Winfried Heusler is director for aluminum technology at the Schco concern. He has been responsible for many fundamental developmetns and has written widely on the subject.

This is a somewhat technical book for construction professionals. Not for idly paging through, despite its attractive, even stylish, execution (although my copy's hard cover was printed upside down). Only commercial architecture, only buildings in Germany.

A tour de force of new literary criticism.In their introduction, Gallagher (Nobody’s Story, not reviewed) and Greenblatt (Marvelous Possessions, 1991) express the hope that “you will not be able to say what it all adds up to; if you could, we would have failed.” Alas, they succeed, and it’s doubtful that a better demonstration of the anarchy and solipsism of literary criticism today can be found. They mean to demonstrate how their varied approaches to all sorts of “texts” grow out of the rediscovery by scholars like them of the relevance of historical and cultural context to the interpretation of just about everything. But they do so in ways that their predecessors—the Victorian scholars who used history as an interpretive tool before the New Critics began to avoid it—would scarcely comprehend. Moreover, with misplaced modesty, they refuse to claim that their interpretations are any better than others—which, of course, is an imposed interpretive principle of its own. This being said, Gallagher and Greenblatt’s virtuoso readings of paintings, potatoes (yes, spuds), religious ritual, and novels—all “texts”—as well as essays on criticism and the significance of anecdotes, are likely to take their place as model examples of the qualities of the new critical school that they lead. Ironically, because everything they write suffers from what might be called the fallacy of excessive significance (i.e., finding in texts what may not be there), they reveal themselves to be as adept at close reading as the New Critics they shun. Historians (who know something about historicism) will find their teeth set on edge by the way Gallagher and Greenblatt do history. Waiting for a Theory of Practice

Written by the two leading practitioners of New Historicism, this book is the most valuable reference up to date demonstrating the power, as well as the weaknesses, of this peculiar "method" of reading. The first three chapters on methodology advocate the immanence of (counter)historical particulars and anecdotes, which explains the authors' reluctance to endorse any transcendental abstraction of theory. Paradoxically, the historical sense as well as literary "taste" (the valuation of difference, details, ruptures) that Greenblatt and Gallagher embrace is recognisably shaped by contemporary theoretical interventions, but this debt to theory is obscured as a result of their disavowal of any "methodological directives." This obstinate disavowal, worse still, seems to join force with the conservative current of "Against Theory" in the name of history (the very motto put forward by some critics who are also related to New Historicism). The next four chapters are the "practice" part, where the authors obviously feel more at home. Their close reading and deft montage of a wide variety of discourses or artifices (drama, fiction, paintings, theological and economic debates, medical treatises...) is marvelous and dazzling, testifying how much New Historicism has widened the horizon of literary criticism. The juxtaposition of topics (the Host and the potato, the wicked sons in Hamlet and Great Expectations) also throws unexpected light on the materials. Yet the question remains: how to theorise further such montage or juxtaposition, if it is not entirely governed by whim?

The conceptual frame work of New Historicism is not the toughest to grapple with and when done right makes excellent literary analysis. This book really lays out its pedagogical applications in a clear and tangible way. I teach Literary Criticism and now I include this book for my undergrads so that they can understand this process better.

Better than many similar offerings in this category

I have picked up many books for guitar on how to play chords, scales and leads from the top 100 free list and, although the information is good in most cases, the formatting leaves much to be desired on a Kindle. Many of the illustrations are too small and can't be zoomed without losing focus or there is writing on the guitar neck which obscures the information or...well, I think you get my drift.

This book scores well on its informational content and its writing style, but you still have a few hoops to jump through before the illustrations are 100% usable. You might try simply zooming each illustration to see if it becomes legible, which it might...if you have good eyes or don't mind hunching over your Kindle while you read and play. My preference is to set my Kindle to landscape and then zoom. I end up with illustrations which are easy and comfortable to read. The drawback is that you have to zoom each and every time you want to use another example. I don't understand why authors make us go through all this when it seems they could just make the illustration full-page size to begin with. Perhaps it is a problem with the publishing tools for Kindle.

In any event, let it suffice to say that with a little tweaking on your Kindle, you do get fully usable music examples with this book. That's a nice change.

I knocked off 1/2 star because it is a PITA to have to jump through these hoops over and over while using music-related books on a Kindle. This book however, is worth it.

Purple Tiger Series

I have read several ebooks from the Purple Tiger Guitar Series and continue to get something out of each reading. You are given exercises that get you up and playing without needing a lot of knowledge in music theory. Some knowledge of the major scales is recommended. The exercises are written in tab and an explanation of each exercises is presented before the actual exercise. The exercises can be used to improve fretboard knowledge and navigation as well as build technique and melodic ability, without extra study.

Best thing i have read all year!

Nightblade is a wonderful dark fantasy that really does it right. The characters feel realistic and like actual people that react appropriately to sitautions that they are faced with. Often i am put off by alot of fantasy because of the lack of realism within the fantastical world. Nightblade is a perfect blend between the fantastical and the realistic that builds a believeable world with great characters and locations. The journey of the main character, Loren, is in itself a great adventure that would satisfy any reader but on top of that Garrett Robinson builds a rich and fleshed out world along with the story. Locations, characters and societies all add something to the world as they are introduced and really make the world feel more fleshed out and like an actual place. However the greatest part of Nightblade is it's mystery. It keeps you reading and constantly engaged. There is never a dull moment in Nightblade.

Nightblade = AWESOME!

Nightblade was AWESOME! I found out about Garrett Robinson through the SPP Podcast and Sterling and Stone. Nightblade sat in my Kindle for a bit before I had time to devote to reading it. And once I started reading Nightblade, I couldn't put it down. Immediately, Robinson plunges the reader into a series of fast-paced events without sacrificing the initial details for introducing the main characters and their world. Throughout the whole of the book, the action never really stops. The main character, Loren, is constantly driven towards different goals, which adds to the quick pacing. Truly, there are never moments in Nightblade where the reading experience drags. Once I was finished, I kept thinking about the book, and wondering what was going to happen in the sequel! I think that Nightblade deserves to be on the NY Times Bestseller list alongside some of the fantasy books that are receiving a lot of attention. I can't wait until the sequel, Mystic, is released in one volume! I hope that Robinson has several more books planned for the Nightblade series, and I can't wait to check out the Realm Keepers Series him and Z.C. Bolger author!

Nightblade--the New and Improved Version

I'm not fond of starred reviews, so my opinion of NIGHTBLADE boils down to a solid "OK." The characters are serviceable, the writing is decent (and recently subject to subtle tightening at the hands of Mr. Robinson's new colleagues), but I find the whole thing a bit too trope-y, predictable, and sometimes inexplicable to really love. This book, and its successors are great for a quick escape and a tangled romp through a fantasy world, but it leaves me wanting greater complexity.

Constance Staley is a Professor of Communication at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, where she has directed the First-Year Seminar Program for nearly 25 of her 40 years in higher education. Really helpful for returning students.

As long as people understand this book is more geared towards people that have not just graduated from high school I think they will find this helpful. If you are simply coming straight from HS you will likely find this material to be common sense. If I had this book when I did transition from the military to college than I would have gotten actual use out of it instead of taking an easy class. This book will give you the basic tools you need to get back into an academic lifestyle. It can be an anxious time for most and this book help alleviate most concerns.

Not like most vocal scores

Most Piano/Vocal scores from Broadway and/or Hollywood include guitar chords in addition to the piano and vocal lines. Most of the songs within this songbook do NOT have the guitar chords published. For piano 'fakers', the chord designations are a must. This is a serious deficiency in this songbook.

On the positive side, all the great music and songs expected were present, and as far as I can tell, with the original piano arrangements.

Be Careful -- Make Sure This Is What You Want

I agree with the reviewer that these are the original piano arrangements. But what that means is that for some selections, the arrangement does not include the melody so unless someone is singing you don't "get" the song you might think you would in the piano part.

These selections are purely accompaniment: Another Hundred People, The Ballad of Sweeney Todd, By the Sea, Could I Leave You? Green Finch and Linnet Bird, Pretty Lady, Remember?

The rest are a hybrid, some melody, some accompaniment: Broadway Baby, I'm Still Here, The Miller's Son.

They're all beautiful arrangements -- just as long as you know what you are and are not getting.

Sondheim's Masterpieces

As a fanatical Sondheim lover and singer, this book was awonderful addition to my collection. Among some of his best earlytitles, this book includes songs like "I Remember", "Losing My Mind", and "Another Hundred People". These are wonderfully written pieces which deserve many books like this one. They are a joy to listen to and even more to play, and I hope everyone will enjoy this book as much as I do.
