Engineering Intersects Design

As an engineer in other media (software) who enjoys civil engineering and architecture done well, this book entertained and inspired me as few others in the last five years. Peter Rice appears to enjoy a risk, a change, a challenge. He listens to the materials to find solutions to problems, creating the practical engineering resolution to an abstract design. The newest tools, materials, techniques, talents are marshalled into the cause. But so is a spark of inspiration, an angle of attack.
The interaction of these words - risk, change, challenge, materials, engineering, design, problems, solutions - is described in a mostly auto-biographical tale. Each chapter centers on a project or two in which Rice was involved. Particularly fun was how working with the different people and cultures sometimes added to the challenge, and the result.
There is little doubt in my mind that any creative, design-centered profession can draw inspiration from this book.

Humane and inventive...

The austerity of the title and prose only bolster Rice's deserved recognition as a genius of our time. Rice looks back on his past projects and recounts them with a very unique combination of sensitivity and logic. A degree of sadness overcomes you when reading his remarkably sincere narrations, knowing that he wrote this in the final throes of his life.

If you have the funds to actually purchase this book, you won't regret it.

Peter Rice was a genius behind modern landmarks like the Sydney Opera, the Centre Pompidou, and Lloyd's Bank in London. This british structural engineer gave our world a mighty heave to the future. He humbly sings throughout this book to his love of his work, to the greatness of human mind, and to the evolution of our understanding of materials and tools.

About the Author
Herman Rothman was born in Berlin in 1924 but fled to Britain in 1940 as a Jewish refugee. He enlisted in the British Forces later in the war and was then seconded to the No.3 Counter-Intelligence Corps. After studying a degree in history he worked as an economist and a trust lawyer before his retirement. Helen Fry has written and edited more than 20 books, specializing in works about World War II.

A unique look on this very dangerous spirit

I have read a few books on this topic so I expected a repeat of what was previously said. But not this book. This author gives a fresh and candid look at this spirit from a deeper standpoint. Through stories and personal accounts, this author gets to the root of the issue by challenging the reader to avoid the sly manipulations that empower this spirit. At times, I had to check my own heart because the pitfalls are so subtle yet highly effective in the kingdom of darkness. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a prophetic gift. It may just save you from falling into deception.

POWERFUL weapon of warefare!

My wife has battled debilitating bouts of anxiety her whole life. She spent an entire year of her childhood in and out of the hospital, lost all of her hair, and missed a year of school as a result of what i believe to be demonic attacks called "anxiety". over the years she has learned how to "cope" with fewer than usual episodes but this unexplicable and uncontrollable attack continued to run a portion of her life. As i was about mid way through the book she called me one afternoon having an anxiety attack and she was unable to function. Immediately i thought to myself "rebuke the spirit of Jezebel". i thought the worst thing that could happen was... nothing. as we did so immediately the anxiety lifted and she was able to go about her day. for the first time in decades we had a weapon that was effective against the demonic attacks on my bride. since then we have ministered to countless people and been able to identify and declare freedom over our own families.

This book is not only powerful but educational with a balanced and biblical look at the person or spirit of Jezebel. I would reccomend to any person who understands and is prepared to learn effective war against the demonic. as a matter of fact, i purchased over 20 copies to give to those i feel the Holy Spirit has led me to.

Fabulous Resource

The process of bringing new talent into an organization is essential and vital for an organizations success. Too often we think we're asking the right questions when hiring employees. About the Author
Robert G. Gallager is a Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the world's leading information theorists. He is a Fellow of the US National Academy of Engineering, the US National Academy of Sciences, and his numerous awards and honours include the IEEE Medal of Honour (1990) and the Marconi Prize (2003). He was awarded the MIT Graduate Student Teaching Award in 1993, and this book is based on his 20 years of experience of teaching this subject to students.

Excellent Textbook

Stochastic Processes: Theory for Applications is very well written and does an excellent job of bridging the gap between intuition and mathematical rigorousness at the first-year graduate engineering school level. The book is a combination of the material from two MIT courses: (6.262) Discrete Stochastic Process and (6.432) Stochastic Processes, Detection, and Estimation. Because of this, the book shares much in common with Prof. Gallager's previous textbook: Discrete Stochastic Processes (ISBN-13: 978-0792395836 published 1995). I would not recommend to those interested only in this sub-topic - and who already own DSP - to purchase this new textbook as not much new will be gained. Nevertheless, the new inductee into the stochastic process world will be well served by this excellent update.

Lack of Sparkle for "Cradles of Eminence"

My interest in this book stemmed from two inclinations: The desire to know the life stories of people who serve, in some respects, as role models and an interest in resilience as a life process. This text does not adequately paint the stories of eminent persons, leaving me wanting more details in order to understand their struggles and triumphs. The matter of resilience is also expressed meagerly and only in terms of the dynamics that did or did not facilitate it, leaving me wanting more in terms of how resiliency manifested in their lives. I wish I could get a refund but will probably donate it to the "exchange shelf" at my fellowship!

Not bad, but didn't hold my interest

Not bad, but didn't hold my interest. I thought it would get me fired up to get after it with starting my design company and it more put me to sleep. This is a well recognized and famous book (or at least i come across references to it here and there) so maybe it's just me. But I couldn't give a whole hearted thumbs up. Sort of a personal preference, so going to give it 3 stars.

Fantastic physics in Q&A format, but requires immediate editing with extreme prejudice

The physics Q&A format is marvelous. I look forward to sitting down with my kids when they're old enough to understand the easy stuff, and later on when they can tackle the harder ones. I truly loved working my way through this book.

However.

If you purchase this book, do yourself a massive favor and immediately cut out and throw away the 20 or so sheets following the index. Do not look at, do not read these when you do so. A brilliant book is enormously tarnished by the author's non-physics, off-topic crazy-person rant at the end. Trust me, you don't want to read it, as it will affect how you perceive the actual physics content of the book. I wish I had never seen it - it knocked a six star book down to three and made it much harder to recommend to others.

Great book for personal and classroom use!

I intend to use this in my classes for the upcoming year both with my 8th graders as well as senior students many of the questions not only make students think but can also be used to identify misconceptions. The font is nice and big and the drawings are a plus I try to get my students to sketch their questions before they attempt them so this is lovely. I will just say it would have nice if all the scenarios were in S.I units but as I recognise this is written for an american audience it's not a big deal it will just give my students a chance to practice unit conversions!

Should be forced on every high school student

Every so often I pick up a book that I wish I read 10 years ago. Feynman's Lectures on Physics and Van Hess's Thermodynamics are among these, as well as Polya's How To Solve It for those more mathematically inclined. These would have certainly saved me from much confusion during my college engineering curriculum, for they focus on teaching the material to the reader, as opposed to masking it in the equations of a textbook. Some lucky folks have the ability to glance at equations and immediately grasp their meaning; for the other 99.99% of us, an intuitive explanation replete with real-world analogies helps to bring the meaning to life.

With a presentation both unique and entertaining, Lewis Carroll Epstein's Thinking Physics has certainly claimed a rightful seat at the roundtable of wonderful didactic books. Every page poses a question that challenges the reader on his view of the physical world, and nearly every answer tears down the fallacies of his intuition. Socrates would have been proud of the format, with each new question expanding on concepts developed in earlier answers. One of the 1-star reviews mentioned a lack of organization. This criticism completely misses the point. It is NOT a textbook, so "obviously" it will lack some of the rigorous development of concepts and precise organization that you would expect in a physics text. It IS a popular physics book with lots of cartoony pictures that a kid in elementary school could both enjoy and understand. At the same time, the insights will help build anyone's physics intuition, regardless of age. I read this book when I was 30. I have since started going through problems in Kleppner and Kolenkow and some other more advanced texts, and I really think this book helped.
