"Hold Me!" is a delightful collection of Jules Feiffer's cartoons in dramatic form. A series of short skits about life and anxiety and marriage, I have fond memories of playing one of the many-roled male parts in this wonderful assemblage. It's a great read as well as great fun to act.

This reader wishes that he had this text when he led the restructuring of his own school eight years ago. The author provided an excellent balance of research couple with practical hands-on resources for the practitioner seeking to lead school change and provide effective leadership.

The text is highly relevant for lead-teacher and administrator in-service programs. It is an "easy read" and provides highly practical contexts, hands-on materials for workshops and reflection for continuous improvement. About the Author

Frank Siccone Ed.D. is an educator, author, and organizational leadership consultant. For three decades he has been offering workshops to teachers and administrators throughout the country, and has conducted youth leadership training for students not only in the United States, but also from Russia, and South Africa.

Dr. Siccone has written a previous book on school leadership entitled, The Power To Lead: A Guide For School Administrators On Facilitating Change. His first book, 101 Ways to Develop Student Self-Esteem and Responsibility was co-authored with Jack Canfield (co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul). His books have been translated into Chinese, Czech, Russian, and Spanish. He has taught classes and workshops at several colleges and universities including the California State University, East Bay and San Bernardino; San Francisco State University; University of California, Riverside; the University of San Francisco; and the Leadership Institute at Yale University.

In addition to his work in education, Frank has also consulted with an impressive list of corporate clients such as Cisco Systems, Hitachi, Intel, Pepsi Cola, Sprint, Sun Microsystems, and Walmart.com. Among the nonprofit organizations with whom he has worked recently are the California Association of Student Councils, The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and Green For All.

Wisdom and insight

I highly recommend this book to any school administrator who wants and needs insights into how to work effectively with teachers and parents. Dr. Siccone is able to offer practical, easy to access tips and strategies on how to communicate, manage, and effectively support your educational community. Having participated in Dr. Siccone's workshops years ago, I can guarantee he is someone who offers
powerful techniques for generating a productive and successful school environment.

Practical and Immediately Useful

This has been an excellent book to use with new and experienced principals. Reading, discussing and working through this book together has provided a forum for rich conversations and a renewed commitment to doing what is right and best for students. The readily available materials and activities are excellent. We are becoming better leaders because of the work we are doing together in this book.

A Blueprint for School Leaders

Essential Skills for Effective School Leadership by Frank Siccone is sprinkled with many thought provoking quotes and parables. The first, however, from John Quincy Adams, sets the tone for the entire book "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." Siccone, from this point forward lays out a blueprint school leaders can follow for transforming a personal vision into reality.

Siccone's blueprint begins with personal development, segues into relational, and team strategies in both human factor and instrumental domains. Within the book's pages are found considerable assessments and worksheets that a leader can apply to any school improvement scenario.

His section on communication and learning styles is cogent. He continually builds on learning style principles in later chapters artfully weaving accrued self-knowledge into practical application.

Siccone's critical contribution to the literature on school leadership is his understanding of the preeminence of context. The author expounds on the concept that successful schools are products of school cultures that promote trust, collaboration, communication, and vision. The book's organization builds on these concepts with how-to worksheets that facilitate school work study teams to transform ideas into actions for their schools.

Siccone identifies the contextual qualities that characterize quality leadership and then provides a usable set of assessment and action tools to bring the vision into reality. His congenial tone and fill-in-the-blank approach gives the sense that the reader is participating in a workshop. About the Author

Susan Simon, a writer and event planner in New York City, is the author of several cookbooks including Visual Vegetables, The Nantucket Table, The Nantucket Holiday Table, Contorni, and Insalate. beautiful but not very useful

i really wanted to love this book. it's beautifully put together with stunning photos, small enough to fit easily into a bag and supposedly the perfect book for my recent shopping trip to marrakech. unfortunately, this book has three major problems which render it pretty useless.

1. no "best of" list - if you don't have much time to shop and you want to find out what the author thinks is the best place for carpets or slippers, you can't use the book for that. yes, the list would be subjective, but at least it would be something. instead, you have to read through the entire book to find mention of the items you're most interested in. which leads me to disappointment #2

2. there is no index or guide that breaks down the stores by type or product. she arranges the book by walking tour, which is nice because it gives you an easy plan of attack. unfortunately, you can't search an index or anything to quickly find a certain good easily.

3. no words of advice or bargaining techniques. we all know you will get ripped off in the medina and boutique stores are expensive. that said, what is a good price for a caftan or tea set? she does not give any help in knowing what an average or decent sale should be. a shopping book should provide this advice when so much shopping happens in stores that aren't fixed price.

these critiques could be easily addressed in future editions of the book, should it be reprinted. if they are, i think this would be a great buy for anyone planning a trip to marrakech.

Good for navigating the Marrakech shopping scene

Like a number of other reviewers it seems, I am not the biggest fan of Marrakech, but I did really like this book. The pictures and the descriptions were really so beautiful and interesting, I read the book cover to cover on the plane ride there (didn't hurt that it was 15 hours either...). I did two of the full walks, one in the Medina and the Gueliz walk and then went to a few other shops that looked interesting or had something we wanted. Frankly, I found the Medina a little too grimy for my taste, but I liked having this book to point me in the right direction. In the Medina, you can walk past stall after stall all selling pretty much the same thing. How can you tell which place is good for rugs or babouche or whatever? It's nice to have someone point you to what they at least think is the best quality or most interesting stuff. The shopkeepers of the stores in this book were all very nice, although not necessarily any more professional than at other shops (i.e. they would still pursue you down the street trying to interest you in buying something). I greatly enjoyed shopping in Gueliz compared to shopping in the Medina. The goods were more stylish, the prices were marked, and the sales pressure was nil.

The downsides to this book are 1) As another reviewer pointed out, there is no breakdown of the stores by what they sell, so if you want to buy say a lamp, you have to look at every listing 2) There was no indication what the prices of the items might be, so you have no idea if you getting taken advantage of in your negotiations 3) Recommendations for restaurants or cafes along the walks would have been appreciated (there were a few, but not for every walk) 4) Manager of our riad said that some of the listings were out of date, although I did not encounter any

Another thing to note is that this book basically identifies you as an American to anyone who knows of it (certainly the shopkeepers mentioned in the book, I'm not sure if other shopkeepers or touts in the Medina would know about this book). While we didn't face any discrimination because of this (nor would I expect any Marrakech shopkeeper to discriminate against a paying customer), it's just something to keep in mind.

Overall, I loved the style of this book and I would love it if there were more to other great, but overwhelming, shopping cities such as Bangkok or Istanbul.

A total fantasy

This book features lovely photographs, but the the premise is a total fantasy. Marrakech is a wonderful place to visit, but it is not a good place to shop. There are a few cute stores which are on the pricey side. Rather, the retail scene is dominated by hundreds of small stalls in the souks which are a labyrinth to try to find your way around in. The vendors feature virtually identical merchandise over and over and over again with no attempt at originality.
Things worth buying are babouche, the whimsical backless slippers made of lambskin. They come in a dazzling array of crayon box color combinations and are very comfortable. Also look for thuya wood small boxes, salad bowls ect. They are handcarved of burlwood and look far more expensive than they are. Likewise, find the rare argan oil which is usually made into cosmetic creams, although when roasted the argan nut produces a wonderful cooking and salad oil. No matter sometimes it is diluted with cheaper oils so you don't always know what you are getting. Saffron, mint tea, preserved lemon and tagine spice mixes are also interesting; however beware of bottles leaking in your suitcase!
I would avoid knockoff handbags, sunglasses and wristwatches. Also, avoid the fake pashminas, rugs, ugly caftans, etc. that you will see over and over again.
The local handicrafts, jewelry, djellabas, rugs, caftans, ect all have a lot of potential. However the local vendors haven't picked up on any new ideas and have no knowledge of merchandising. As mentioned the mechandise is mindnumbingly repetitive. Beware,you will have to haggle. Don't bother combing through the hundreds of stalls looking for something original. After you've seen a dozen vendors you've probably seen all there is to see. Keep going for the experience even if you don't find anything.
Also, foreign women are sometimes fondled or touched inappropriately after dark. It's best to be alert, walk in a group, and don't stay out too late. Plus beware of taxi drivers. Negotiate a price BEFORE you get in the car as they have meters but rarely use them. Also beware of guides who get kickbacks for steering you to certain rug dealers.

Amazing!!!!

Love love loved it!!!

Sierra and Hale are both focused on their professional lives. When they meet, sparks fly and the attraction they feel cannot be ignored. But will Sierra be able to get over the fact that Hale is technically her boss? You'll just have to read it to find out!!

I cannot stop thinking about this book! Julie's style of writing is exceptional!! Her characters are realistic, and have so much depth. You can't help but fall in love with them. The heroines Julie creates are smart, strong women and her heroes are swoon-worthy with hearts of gold! Sierra and Hale's story was no different. I couldn't put this book down. I cannot wait to read more from this author!!

Slave to love was no exception

Let me start off by saying that I am a huge fan of Julie Richman's books. Slave to love was no exception. Hale and Sierra have definite chemistry together. I even liked that fact that they did not jump into bed the first chance they got and instead, let the anticipation build. When they did finally get to that stage, it was well written and sensual. The story line was an interesting one and Sierra's friends were the perfect comic relief and BFF's a girl could ask for. We even heard from a much loved character from a previous series. Although it was not a big part, it was nice having Schooner make an appearance. Loved the book and the epilogue.

Wanted Moore...

I've read all her books and I encourage everyone to read the Searching for Moore series. It's outstanding! While this book is well written, it lacks the character and story emotions and feels that I felt with her first series. I felt there was too much ancillary detail added, to much " clinical" content and not enough main character interaction to warrant the feelings they were supposed to have for each other. Then they were official for a total of a couple of chapters. Then of course they have the breakup that every book has at around the 80% mark. Wanted more from the characters and their interactions.

In a loosely configured essay, Rybczynski (Architecture, McGill Univ.) discusses the idea of comfort and the Western cultural attitudes that have shaped it since the end of the middle ages. Rather than dealing with the technical aspects of architecture, he reviews such cultural variables as intimacy and privacy, domesticity, ease, and ideas about light, air, and efficiency as they have changed over time. Essentially Rybczynski makes a plea for the primacy of cultural ideals as a basis for creating psychologically comfortable homes. Though he is selective in his history and examples, this is a worthwhile counterweight to the all-too-common technical practices of modern architects. Recommended. The underlying concepts of domesticity

I love this book. I love the topic, analyzing the humble dwellingplace for its universals. I love the way he has organized by those very topics rather than by the detail of historic era or functional object. "Home" liberates the whole topic to a level whidh allows the reader to consider what all people have in common for their needs and ambitions, and it inspires such optimism for it demonstrates how resourceful people naturally are. The reader feels so much more aware of mindless routines and can delight in the choices of continuing what is habit or deliberately designing a new tradition. For this reason I like using the book with middle school and high school students. It is too long for the time allowed in the school calendar, but it suits a jigsaw approach of different groups of students studying one of the conceptual chapters and applying the insights to their own lives. The reading level is challenging but appropriate if students are not expected to read too much of it in too short a time. This is one of those treasured volumes that suits the purest progressive tradition of education: it is based on authentic experience which helps students find meaning in their real lives here and now, all the while stretching their capacity to see logic in the world. A nice companion to it is "House" by Tracey Kidder for its similarly direct and quiet manner of discussing the decisions people make, alone and collaboratively, to improve their living situation. Like "Cod", this book should be the way students learn history: focused on a recognizable topic and connecting years and years of interaction between people as it describes the everyday personal consequences of innovation and competition. 'Home: a short history of an idea" needs more than five stars, and it needs to be widely available to schoolchildren, perhaps by individual chapter.

This book is an exploration into the meaning of the word "comfort" and its place in the home. Rybczynski begins the volume with an examination of the Sixteenth Century painting by Durer "Saint Jerome in His Study". He describes each of the objects and furnishings visible in the paining in turn, noting that they are not particularly conducive to comfort or reflective of individuality. Rybczynski goes on to describe how this painting may be representative of the era in which it was painted, how houses at the time had many occupants and were spaces where people lived communally, but not necessarily as a family in the present sense of the term. He argues that in the Sixteenth Century, the nuclear family as a residential unit was non-existent, since children were sent away to live and work with others at a young age, and households always included many unrelated servants or apprentices. It was only later, as the concept of the nuclear family became more established that the need for privacy came to the fore, and private and public spaces began to be differentiated within the house. Later developments in technology, especially plumbing, ventilation, and lighting also came to influence housing design. One of the themes of the book is how the field of interior design has often been faced with the conflict between what looks good and what feels good. Rybcynski stresses that often the style of a design wins out, leaving the residents with the very least in comfort (to the point of having to carry their toothbrushes to and from the bathroom for lack of proper storage there, for instance).
Some of Rybcynski's discussion is quite interesting, particularly that concerning the influences French, Dutch, and British cultures have had on the development of houses and homes over the centuries, especially in North America. It would have been interesting to consider some of the influences of other world cultures on housing styles as well. For example, certainly Spanish and Arabic cultures have had a strong impact on house design and interiors of North American homes. However, considering such topics for the sake of completeness might have taken the book too far afield. In order to explore the concept of comfort with respect to design, Rybcynski has selected only a few examples of cultures and designers to explicate his points.
The book is academic in style, although quite accessible and engaging for the general reader. Sources are listed in the extensive endnotes, and there is an index.

I first read this book 14 years ago and it changed my life. This book is a must for anyone buying or building a home. You will never look at a house in the same way again, and you will appreciate good and functional design as never before . Your understanding and excitment at the things that make a house a pleasant home will be enhanced more by this book that any academic or popular text on the subject that I have seen or read. The author weaves together the historcal and social aspects, as well as design, in an intriguing tale. This is truly absorbing reading, you will not want to put it down. It is plainly and simply, very well writen. Rybczyski speaks as one of us.

Quintessential Review of the Chemistry & Pharmacology of Opioid Analgesics

This comprehensive, thoroughly referenced treatment of opioid analgesics is relevant and applicable even today (25 years after its publication), given the rapidly burgeoning research of the past 40+ years on agonist-antagonist analgesics and opioid receptors. The authors have surpassed their stated aim, "to afford medicinal scientists an entry into the chemistry and biological activity of morphine and related compounds."

Very few researchers are more qualified to review the 100+ years of opioid chemistry/pharmacology than the authors of this title, Alan F. Casy and Robert T. Parfitt. A. F. Casy has dedicated his entire 60+ year career to the field of opioid research and has published hundreds of papers in the peer-reviewed literature during this time. R. T. Parfitt has dedicated much of his career to the study of opioids as well. At the time this book was published, I can think of only a few other researchers who were equally qualified to author such a comprehensive review. These include some of the heaviest hitters in the opioid research community, such as Philip S. Portoghese, Nathan B. Eddy, Kenneth W. Bentley, Everette L. May, Paul A.J. Janssen, and Daniel Lednicer.

An introductory chapter that briefly covers definitions, testing methods, side effects, pharmacokinetics, and biochemical and bibliographical aspects is followed by 4,5-Epoxymorphinans, not surprisingly, the most extensive chapter of the book. Chapters 3-5, concerned with, respectively, morphinans, benzomorphans, and the interesting but little-investigated 5-arylmorphans, follow logically for reasons of genesis and structural similarities. The next three chapters treat piperidine-type analgesics (pethidine and related 4-phenylpiperidine analgesics-6; further analgesics based on piperidine and related azabicycloalkanes: prodines, promedols, profadol, and their derivatives-7; fentanyl and the 4-anilinopiperidino group of analgesics-8). Methadone and related 3,3-diphenylpropylamines constitute Chapter 9 while enkephalins, endorphins, and other opioid peptides are given good coverage in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 deals with miscellaneous groups of analgesics (atypical structural types, e.g., benzimidazoles, tetrahydroisoquinolines, arylcyclohexylamines, aminotetralins, etc.). The final two chapters on antagonists, dualists (agonist-antagonists), and Kappa agonists (12) and opioid receptors (13) are particularly scholarly and should evoke widespread interest. Throughout, molecular geometry (especially optical isomerism) and structure-activity analyses and interrelationships are emphasized.

Major criticisms of the book are the lack of coverage of non-Mu opioids and the price. Coverage of opioid ligands acting at the Kappa and Delta opioid receptors was lacking. Only a single 39-page chapter was devoted to topics such as partial opioid agonist-antagonists, antagonists, dualists and Kappa agonists. With partial agonist-antagonists, mixed agonists, and Delta/Kappa ligands comprising a significant portion of opioid research over the past 25+ years, it is surprising that so little content was devoted to such topics. As far as the price is concerned, for a 540-page book, a list price of $299 is unreasonable. As a result, I have posted a free eBook version of this book on Scribd. Minor criticisms are the use of 3-benzazocine numbering with the 6,7-benzomorphan generic name (Chapter 4) and the limiting subtitle of the book which could better have been "Chemistry, Pharmacology and Receptors."

Rowling will help tide over Harry Potter fans as they await book five, and raise money for a good cause: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander, an A to Z listing of all beings magical (and required reading for all first-year Hogwarts students), and Quidditch Through the Ages by Kennilworthy Whisp (a "renowned Quidditch expert"), the official handbook of the wizard's sport of choice, both with a foreword by esteemed Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore. Rowling wrote the books to raise funds for Comic Relief in the U.K., a charitable organization helping poor and disadvantaged people in Africa and the U.K. (not affiliated with the U.S. Comic Relief organization). Many printers and paper suppliers are joining in the effort by donating their services.

Gr. 4-7. Because this is a "Harry Potterless" year, kids in need of a fix may find it in these two volumes. The conceit is that these are Harry's schoolbooks (Fantastic Beasts, by Newt Scamander; Quidditch, by Kennilworthy Whisp), with margin notes by Harry and pal Ron Weasley. The concept breaks down in the introductions: Professor Dumbledore explains that the books are being offered to muggles (because the proceeds of the books are going to British charity Comic Relief, a disclosure that will raise the eyebrows of any reader who undestands the importance of secrecy in the wizard world. Nevertheless, a lot of effort has gone into making these seem like real textbooks. The jackets look torn and faded, the print is (annoyingly) small, and the information is well detailed. Illustrations are in short supply, and not every fan will want to know this much about Quidditch and imaginary beasts, especially when the text is so hard to read. Buy several copies (the money really does go to charity), but expect a few disappointed readers. REVWR

***READ BEFORE BUYING***

Being the complete potterhead that I am, I loved this book. I reccommend it for anyone who is interested in reading an informative encyclopedia-like book that you can find in the home of many wizarding folk. This book is supposed to be in similar format to a dictionary. DO NOT BUY IT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A STORY. This book is used in the wizarding world as a guide on topics such as where to find a Hippogriff or what a knarl really is. Page wise, it is on the small side and lacks pictures, but if you love it as much as I do, it doesn't really matter. Multible people gave this only one star (undeservingly so in my opinion). Many of these people did so purely because they didn't research the product (by using the internet or READING THE HP BOOKS) before buying and were looking for a fairly tale or story similar to the new upcoming movie based on the book, not an encyclopedia. Do not let these bad reviews stop you from buying this book. I do suggest actually going to a book store rather than buying it from amazon though. That way, you will be able to skim through the pages and see if this is your kind of book. In addition, I read a few unsettling reviews about how in the name of God there is going to be a movie made based on the book. In case you are interested the movie is going to be about the author, Magizoologist Newt Scamander. Hope my review was helpful.

A lot of fun for Harry Potter fans. My nine year old daughter loved it. She really enjoyed the funny hand written comments included throughout the book as if it were a student text book.

Best Book for Beginners Learning Russian from Scratch

I've compared dozens of books about learning Russian from scratch, and this one is the best. There are advanced grammar texts out there which have more information, but they aren't geared toward beginners. The beauty of this book is that if you know absolutely nothing about Russian, you can start at the beginning and work your way through each lesson in the order presented, and by the time you're done, you will have a solid understanding of Russian grammar. Not only that, but you'll have a vocabulary of some of the most useful words in the Russian language.
When I first started studying Russian, I had no teachers or classes or cassette tapes to help me. My eighth grade math teacher gave me a copy of the original version of The Penguin Russian Course, which was compiled by J.L.I. Fennell and published in 1961. The methodology was logical and straightforward with no spoonfeeding or watered-down grammar lessons accompanied by cutesy cartoon pictures. In each lesson, you would first memorize a list of new vocabulary words. Then you would study several concise grammar principles which were clearly explained. Third, you would examine a brief Russian text which incorporated the new vocabulary and applied the new grammar principles which you had just learned in the lesson. Finally, you would translate an English text into Russian to test yourself on the new vocabulary and grammar. At the end of the book was a key which showed the correct translation of the English text into Russian, so you could check yourself.
This new version of the Penguin Russian Course is not as concise and straightforward as the first version, but it's actually better. Nicholas J. Brown has incorporated the original structure of J.L.I. Fennell's version enough that the effectiveness of the lessons is preserved, but Mr. Brown has added much more in this modern version. He has provided numerous additional Russian texts and conversations so that you can see how the vocabulary is used in context. And in this new version, the answer keys at the back of the book show the Russian-English translation as well as the English-Russian translation of the exercises.
The best part of this book is the translation exercises at the end of each lesson and their corresponding answer keys at the back of the book. Translation is probably the best way to test whether or not you really understand the grammar and vocabulary taught in the lessons, and this book gives you plenty of opportunities to test yourself in this manner.
Another advantage of this book is that it's small enough to carry anywhere, unlike those bulky Russian 101 textbooks used in college classes which use a slow, watered-down, almost infantile approach to teaching the language.
If you want to learn Russian, buy this book and work through the lessons. The only major drawback is that you'll never really learn proper pronunciation without listening to native Russians speak the language, and this book doesn't have tapes to accompany it. Other than that, however, you won't find a better book for beginners who want to learn Russian.

Worthy of attention from serious students

It's easy to see from the reviews for this book that there are more than one type of language learner. If you want Russian spoon-fed to you, forget it and learn Italian, French, etc. Russian only becomes usable when you have all of the inflected endings organized and stored in your head. And the only way to accomplish that is by studying with some degree of passion.
I used this book along with the 3 pimsleur sets on russian and now have a very strong foundation to proceed into advanced studies. This book has a good mix of grammar and texts to translate. I never felt overwhelmed. That said, I progressed on a two-steps-forward and one-step-back basis. You will too if you want to learn Russian, so don't sweat it. It's normal. I was relieved when I got to chapter 10 or so and the book said something about "you have now met X number of words and have probably forgot most of them. That's ok. Just learn them again and it will get easier."
My one regret with the book: I wish there was a workbook for more exercises. The exercises in the book are good, but I had to make up my own to really become accomplished at slinging those endings the way I wanted.
Stay away from this book if you are looking for nice phrases for travelers. This book will teach you only if you put the right kind of effort into your studies.
I have dozens of books on Russian and this is the one that taught me what I needed to know.

Solid Introduction

The main strength of this book is its completeness. By using this book alone it is possible to obtain a good understanding of basic Russian. No other reference is necessary, thus for a single volume course this has no equal. By any standards this is a good book.
There are weaknesses. Dependent on your point of view, the focus on an academic type course of instruction with rigorous grammar might not appeal to some (and attract others), as stated in the introduction, one of the books objectives is to bring the reader up to UK 'A' Level standard (Roughly equivalent to the first two years of an American College course). This isn't one of those 'jaunty' conversational type courses, as reflected perhaps in the lack of an audio medium such as a CD or Cassette being available.
I'd recommend this book to Russian Students and those wanting a sound academic grounding in Russian. For those whom wish to just converse in basic Russian (lets say for a tourist or business trip) it may be better to look at other courses that are combined with an Audio package.
However if you have additional access to a Russian speaker or are based in Russia I'd not hesitate to recommend this book as your first choice of instruction.
Again, as a single volume, and if I could have only one Russian book this would be it. No question about it.
For those reasons I'd give it 5 starts for a self-contained course, 4 stars for an academic instructional course, and 2 stars if you just want a quick intro to conversational Russian.
