Way way way too much detail for the average reader. It's not really a novel or a story. It's more like a very detailed fast-moving documentary of literally hundreds of horses and bloodlines and horse farms- then leading up to, obviously, Secretariat. But even at that point in the story it's more about horses, bloodlines and details about racing them, than it is about the story of the family who eventually brought this horse to the forefront. This would be awesome for a true lover of horse races and bloodlines. For the rest of us the movie is the way to go.

Science. Fantasy. Dragons. Super fun.

I wasn’t too sure what solarpunk was about, but wow, this is totally a thing I want to see more of. Sci-fi + fantasy with an emphasis on environmentalism and a bright future? Yes, VERY EXCELLENT.

This anthology in particular was a joy to read. “Wings of Renewal” contains 22 stories with a focus on dragons in solarpunk, and it’s filled with a wide diversity of genders and sexualities and ages and relationships. Not every story grabbed me, but they all had a sparkle to them.

My favorite of the bunch is Megan Reynolds’s “Petrichor”. Witches who turn into dragons and fall in love to help bring rain to a town stricken with famine? YEAHHHH. Totally great.

What Anthologies Should Be

Short stories are just right for the modern reader: long enough to get solid development of character and plot, and short enough that you're not up until 2am trying to finish one more chapter.

Solarpunk is a twist on the dark -punk genres; this one is hopeful that mankind will work out how to get back in harmony with the planet. These stories cover the genre from stem to stern, with all manner of different looks at what our future might be like. There's nothing here to disappoint, except that there are only 22 stories. You want diversity? Check. You want haunting, creepy? Check. How about just plain rollicking fun? Got that, too. The editing is tight and the writing is solid.

You had me at "solarpunk dragons"

I’ve fallen in love with solarpunk. It combines the best of nature, technology, and human cooperation in settings where harmony is valued over profit and prejudice has long ago been defeated.

Solarpunk is a vision of the future that couldn’t be more different than dreary visions of war-torn dystopias ruled over by oppressive governments. It’s a return to the hopeful visions of 60s science fiction: worlds built by environmentalists and social justice activists, engineers and innovators. Societies that run on solar and wind power, where people work together instead of fighting, where anyone of any gender, race, and ability can achieve their dreams.

Add dragons and witches and spaceships to that, and I’ll never look back.

Not only are these stories full of imaginative worldbuilding and hope for the future, they’re also highly diverse.

This collection proudly features disability, racial diversity, and queerness, and various intersections of these. Wings of Renewal hits the ground running: the first story is about a girl who uses and designs prosthetic limbs building a leg for a dragon injured by poachers.

And that’s just the beginning. Following stories include all sorts of characters and settings: airships, spaceships, colony planets, farming communities; witches, shapeshifters, engineers, princesses.Three stories feature queer woman protagonists, and there are dozens of characters of color. Nobody is questioned for their skin color or gender. Instead of having to struggle against an ignorant society, they rescue dragons, save communities, and travel through space.

That’s what I most love about the diversity in this collection- it’s unchallenged. The problems characters face are all related to their adventure, not to having their identities accepted. Which is as the future should be!

On the critical side, I am little disappointed that none of the protagonists were nonbinary and/or transgender, though several minor NB characters did show up. The intended audience also seemed inconsistent. Some stories felt more YA or middle grade, while others felt like standard adult reading. But even with those nitpicks, the collection was amazing.

Solarpunk is the perfect stage for diverse SFF. It’s a future where we’ve overcome oppression and averted ecological crisis, where working together can achieve far more than anyone working alone.

Thomas Huxley became known as a great promoter of Darwinism (also known as Darwin’s bulldog), his grandson, Julian Huxley, a biologist. humanist and writer penned these words: "Evolution . . . is the most powerful and the most comprehensive idea that has ever arisen on earth."

Evolution has indeed become the single most powerful influence drawing people away from faith in God. At the same time the scientific evidence in favor of creation is becoming increasingly obvious. Christians need to learn about some of this evidence. Frank Sherwin of ICR and myself (Jim Bendewald) provide irrefutable evidence against evolution by using the four concepts of mutations, information, the cell and the Cambrian Explosion.

The book incorporates concepts like irreducible complexity, DNA, protein folding, reproduction, punctuated equilibrium and fossils. Appendix A provides an excellent resource for common questions. Appendix B is a resource for applying the concepts of the book in discussions with evolutionists. It also provides chapter summaries with suggested questions for discussion.

Creation/evolution debate

While there are any number of good books on this topic, this one has some features I found particularly helpful. First of all, the terms used were clearly defined. I didn't have to wade through pages trying to find definitions. Secondly, the arguments presented were not only understandable, but usable. I felt I gained enough information about both sides to defend my position if I were involved in a discussion of this issue. Finally, the authors provided several questions at the end of each chapter that helped me think about what I'd read and gain a better understanding of the material.
All in all, Evolution Shot Full of Holes is a book that I will refer back to and recommend to others.

I read this book yesterday, today I odered 5 more copies. A well written book, in language that almost anyone can understand. Yet, it provides very sound, logical arguements. Irrefutable. An excellent gift idea. This is a great book! I will very likely order more copies in the future. I wish I would have found this book years ago.

Training Wheels and Boxing Gloves

This book's introduction sums it up quite well: "The subject matter in this text is not comprehensive; rather, it was designed to be easily understood and persuasive" (p. 14). This book begins with a list of definitions that are unusually clear, alowing readers new to the topic to build a strong foundation. The training wheels come off after the introduction, however, and, to the credit of the author, the boxing gloves come out. In a most clear fashion, this book leaves the starting blocks of the introduction with a vengence and respectfully blows holes in a theory we were all taught to be concrete fact. Referring back to the quote in the introduction, I found this book to be both "easily understood and persuasive" - a definite gem in my referral catalog.

Seriously, I'm skating the edge of completely mental at this point....oh, but what a way to go!!

I'm not gonna lie, after the execution of Potter at the end of 'Dead Water' I was more than a little anxious going into this, there is only so much my poor little shriveled heart can take. This book starts off prior to that very public, very heartbreaking turn of events. Being back in Potter's head after mourning his loss was thrilling, hilarious & devastating all at the same time. I'm admittedly a little emotionally strung out, so my review may be a but jumpy-sorry. I was surprised with how much I enjoyed Potter and Jack Seth's interactions with each other. It was very reminiscent of Murphy, but much more violent Lol

With my eyes fixed on Potter, I headed straight for him. Curling my bony fingers into a fist, I punched him squarely in the face. There was a cracking sound as my fist crunched into the flat of his nose and he shot back down the corridor, landing on the floor.
"What the f*** was that for?"
"It made me feel better"
"No wonder my f****** nose looks the way it does. What, with Murphy's driving and people queuing up to take pot-shots at me the whole f****** time..."
"Maybe you shouldn't be such a prick, and perhaps people wouldn't feel the need to slap you so much."
"Who are you calling a prick...?"

This book reminded me a little of Harry Potter & the prisoner of Azkaban (think Hermione's time-turner, that's all I'm saying). Lots of action and plenty of mystery but most of all were the chills I've come to expect. The scariest part of these books is the huge amount of unknowns, especially with the characters. You really can't trust anyone or anything, as soon as you do it bites you in the arse and that is what keeps me in suspense the most. As soon as you think you have something figured out, you're proved wrong in the worst possible way. We also get to venture back into Jack Seth's head here and that whole experience caught me off-guard. Besides finding him surprisingly quite funny at times, disturbing at others, it becomes quite clear something has changed with him since being holed up with Kiera and re-living his story. He was trying to break her by revealing their true relationship and the secrets of her past, but I think maybe she got to him instead.

'Who was I trying to kid? I'd forgotten how to be good a whole lifetime ago. Being good didn't come easy to me. I struggled with that.'

With so many surprising twists this series will do your head in, this installment was no exception. I think I actually tried to reach into my Kindle at one point to unmask the damn photographer myself - I NEEDED TO KNOW WHO IT WAS!! And again with the friggin cliffhanger - you're gutting me O'Rourke!! I'm desperate for the next book but dreading it too because I absolutely do not want this series to end, I cannot say good-bye, we've been through sooo much with these people, can you see my struggles? Are they clear enough?? See....MENTAL! I cannot say this enough -if you haven't started this series yet, why the hell not?!?? Stop reading this review, go get 'Vampire Shift' and get started on this incredible journey. You WILL NOT be disappointed.

Now I have to be honest, at first I didn't feel excited about this because I feel like is just "killing time" instead of sticking with the essentials and working on the ending. But as DEAD PUSH unfold, I realize why this novel is important. Potter and Seth's objective was to find the Photographer and since they failed to do that there's no real resolution here. They did manage to discover a lot of things, especially with regards to those blasted Elders, but aside from that, DEAD PUSH was really about character self-checks for both Potter and Seth. We can expect Potter to make amends for Kiera, Seth on the other had is a wild card. Who knows what he's going to do next.

DEAD PUSH may have veered off a little bit from the main plot of the series but I think it changed the game in some ways. How? We'll find out in Dead Lost coming soon.

I have written so many good reviews about this series, I would just be repeating myself if I try to tell you how great these books are. I even talk about this series when I rate other authors, because very few can compare to Tim's books. I am so sorry to have this series end. Tim don't make us wait too long for book eight. As SOON as I read that book I will start re-reading the entire series from the beginning.

Here is a question for other readers. How many times did you want to beat the hell out of Potter and Jack? I just kept saying, please don't do it!

About the Author
Jacques Benyamin Doukhan holds a doctorate in Hebrew and Jewish Studies (D.H.L.) from the University of Strasbourg and a doctorate in Theology (Th.D.) from Andrews University. He is professor of Hebrew Language, Exegesis, and Jewish Studies, and director of the Institute of Jewish-Christian Studies at Andrews University. He is the editor of Shabbat Shalom and L'Olivier, two journals devoted to Jewish-Christian rapprochement, and the author of many books, including Drinking at the Sources: An Appeal to the Jew and the Christian to Note Their Common Beginnings, and The Genesis Creation Story: Its Literary Structure.

Presents some fresh insights, but ignores some important facts

This is a delightful and informative book that will offer some under-represented facts to the church, and also explain some miss-understood concepts to Jews.

For example, Doukhan does a great job in the opening chapter to show how Yeshua (Jesus) was a Jewish man who taught as did the sages of the era of the Talmud. Many other authors have of course done this, but Doukhan has a nice summary here. Especially relevant is a debunking of the concept that grace was "invented" by Christianity. Even a casual reading if the Torah shows this was a concept long instilled within the Jewish Scriptures.

I was happy to see that Doukhan does a good job to explain how both Jews and Christians have faulted each other. He explains, in more ways than I have seen, how the original Jewish believers eventually moved away from their Jewish roots and how this influenced Jewish-Christian relations. And such a book would not be complete without the customary discussion of replacement theology and the Christian rejection of the Jewish Scriptures. I think even those who have studied these topics will find some new insights here.

But the book is not without problems. The author seems to ignore critical evidence to support his opinion sometimes. For example, he states that Yeshua was well received in the synagogue, citing Luke 4. But he forgets to mention, that in the very next verse, that those who heard him in the synagogue rushed to throw him out shortly thereafter. He downplays the significance of the Jewish revolts and the strains this placed on Jewish-Christian relations. Too often he generalizes that "a majority" of Jews followed Yeshua ... although many Christian commentators forget that some Jews (and even Rabbi's) did follow the Messiah. His assertion that violence against the original Jewish believers (i.e., Acts) was "not common" is unconvincing. There is not a clear understanding of Acts 15. And he never does explain what he mans that Jews and Christians are "two voices for the same God."

In summary, this book does a good job of setting the record straight about a history of conflict between Christianity and Judaism (Rabbinic). I applaud the author for offering some fresh, thought-provoking perspectives on the topic. Doukhan does a great job to present little-known facts that tent to get downplayed, both in the Church and in the Synagogue. But sometimes the author swings too far in his attempts to balance the scales and marches into error. Still, the book has great use if one is careful. As a leader in a Messianic Congregation, I do recommend the book.

A master-piece for academics and laymen

Dr. Doukhan starts with his own tension on being a Jew and at the same time a believer in Yeshua (Jesus), and then beautifully explain why the two communities departed from one another. Academically written in a personal style. An excellent resource for the honest, curious soul.

Don't Hesitate - Read it Now

I had read Doukhan's "Mystery of Israel", which covers some of the same ideas but with a strictly exegetical approach. This book, written around the same time, complements the other very well, getting into both the Word and history. There are so many striking things about this book. I find it crucial for Christians and Jews to read it.

This book is very easy to get through. I read it in one evening, and one morning; lent it to a friend, and he read it in one night. He was so impacted by it that he texted me at three in the morning to tell of the blessing it had been.

An earlier comment noted that this book may exaggerate some things concerning the Jews' acceptance of Christianity in the first century. I think an important thing to note was that the author was showing how the acceptance as recorded in Acts is often overlooked and replaced by the (mere) two stories of martyrdom. Though there are stories of persecution, the author's detailing of the rapid growth of Christ's followers was very insightful.

I appreciated the deeper insight in Jesus and Paul as practicing Jews. I have read some Jewish authors who have been quick to accept Jesus as a Jew and claim Paul to be the one who made a new religion out of Christianity. It was refreshing to see someone put Jesus and Paul on the same page.

There are too many good things to say about this book. Pick up a copy and let me know your thoughts.

I would recommend reading Doukhan's "Mystery of Israel" either before or after this book for a summary and contrast of three Christian theories concerning Israel (Dispensationalism, Supersessionism, and the Two Witnesses theory).
