About the Author
Dr. James H. Thorp has been a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, KS, USA) and a Senior Scientist in the Kansas Biological Survey since 2001. Prior to returning to his alma mater, Prof. Thorp was a Distinguished Professor and Dean at Clarkson University, Department Chair and Professor at the University of Louisville, Associate Professor and Director of the Calder Ecology Center of Fordham University, Visiting Associate Professor at Cornell, and Research Ecologist at the University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. He received his Baccalaureate from the University of Kansas (KU) and both Masters and Ph.D. degrees from North Carolina State. Those degrees focused on zoology, ecology, and marine biology, with an emphasis on the ecology of freshwater and marine invertebrates. Dr. Thorp is currently on the editorial board of two journals (River Research and Applications and River Systems) and is a former President of the International Society for River Science. He teaches freshwater, marine, and general ecological courses at KU, and his Masters and doctoral graduate students work on various aspects of the ecology of organisms, communities, and ecosystems in rivers, reservoirs, and wetlands. Prof. Thorp’s research interests and background are highly diverse and span the gamut from organismal biology to community, ecosystem, and macrosystem ecology. He works on both fundamental and applied research topics using descriptive, experimental, and modeling approaches in the field and lab. While his research emphasizes aquatic invertebrates, he also studies fish ecology, especially as related to food webs. He has published more than one hundred refereed journal articles, books, and chapters, including three single-volume editions of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates (edited by J.H. Thorp and A.P. Covich) and the first volume (Ecology and General Biology) in the current fourth edition.

Dr. D. Christopher Rogers is a research zoologist at the University of Kansas with the Kansas Biological Survey and is affiliated with the Biodiversity Institute. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of New England in Armidale, NSW, Australia. Christopher specializes in freshwater crustaceans (particularly the Branchiopoda and the Decapoda) and the invertebrate fauna of seasonally astatic wetlands on a global scale. He has numerous peer reviewed publications in crustacean taxonomy and invertebrate ecology, as well as published popular and scientific field guides and identification manuals to freshwater invertebrates. Christopher is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Crustacean Biology and a founding member of the Southwest Association of Freshwater Invertebrate Taxonomists. He has been involved in aquatic invertebrate conservation efforts all over the world.

An all-night read well worth it

The book was released at midnight. I had it finished by 6 a.m. It is rare anymore that I read all night, even rarer is reading all night a book that does not have Stephen King on the cover. This is the conclusion of the Babylon series and, if Sam Sisavath continues the story arc in other directions (we still have most of the main characters-Lara, Danny, Keo, Gabby), series readers can stop now and not feel as if they're hanging in the breeze, unsatisfied. Or we can read more.

I read this in 3 days. I couldn't put it down. And I had a pretty good idea how it was going to end, but I hoped I was wrong. I'm not going to give anything away, but I don't think I've ever cried so much through the last few chapters of a book. If you've been reading the series a and gotten attached to the characters as I have, be prepared to have your heart broken at least a few times. If you haven't read the series, do it. Start at the beginning and read them all. I've loved the Purge series since I read the first book. I know there had to be an end to the story, but I'm a little sad that it's over.

Happy but sad......

Sam does it again, such a great author with fantastic character development and a very satisfying "ending" to a series not to be missed !! I've been a fan of this series since the beginning and this was another great addition to the series, but am very sad that it is the conclusion. I love the characters and their growth over the span of the purge. I've mentioned it before, but it's so refreshing to have the women in this series be the leaders and heroines in many cases, thank you Sam! Yes, this was a dark conclusion, but there's no other way it could have been and still been true to the story. Fast paced non-stop action with some major losses, which also made it so suspenseful because no one was safe. I was disappointed at the reason given that Mabry chose to attack when he did, but not a deal breaker or anything but the reason for my 4 stars rather then 5 stars.
If Sam does decide to extend this story in different directions and with different characters, I'm still in! If you like the dystopia or zombie genre, you will love this series and blast through all 9 books in a flash.
So, this is bittersweet as it's a great book but I'm not sure I'm ready for it to be done. Regardless, go back and get the first book and get ready to shut down your life as you be obsessed with reading every book back to back. I'll re-read the entire series over and over again, as will you once you read the first chapter.

A MARRIAGE MADE FROM CHILDHOOD LOVE

This is book two of the Chase Abbey series. Lord Barrington and Lady Amelia are planning their wedding. He is still very protective and overbearing, but he truly loves her and she, him. Not all marriages are of love, but theirs is and you can feel the love in this story. The plot kept me captivated and the pages turning as they marry, he introduces her to the pleasures of the marriage bed, continues to spank her for her impetuousness and skirting the rules. I enjoyed their witty bantering, her shy innocence, his reprimands, and their overall interaction. This story has surprising twists and turns where Barrington proves he will fight for and go to the ends of the earth to keep her safe. I look forward to the next book in this series.

An entertaining novel.

An engaging novel. The author takes us on an entertaining ride on what it would be like being engaged and newly married in the regency era. Morgan is strong with a firm belief that he knows what is right and best for his bride. Amelia is a minx who can talk herself into more trouble than her bottom can handle. As the readers follow Amelia, we are given glimpses of a younger Morgan. We also see her dreams and hopes for her future as she envisions how her married life will unfold.

This is a light-hearted romance, spiced with a little spanking, offering more to come in the future. This was entertaining.

Wonderful Historical Romance by Alyssa Bailey

This was a wonderful read. The descriptions of the lifestyle of the Regency and Victorian period were so vivid I could see it clearly. The author obviously did much research to nail it. It was very detailed and gave me an idea, just getting dressed, a Lady needed a maid to assist. The characters feelings were deeply developed as well as the secondary characters. This was the second book in the Lord Barrington book. I hope there is a third book. There was sweet romance, suspense, danger, hints of violence, sweet sex and spanking.

Missed several exam objectives

Used Linux for few years, and want prep for the RHCSA and RHCE exams. I study exam objectives from Red Hat, and read book. Yes, I see exam objectives on start of chapters. But several exam objectives not covered inside chapter. I quote exam objectives from Red Hat.

I read whole book, and searched e-book, so I think book missing coverage of all these objectives.

1) Can't find 2>, star, bzip2 commands. I know these commands already, so I forgive these missing objectives. But Red Hat thinks important enough to have in exam objectives.

2) Red Hat objective: "Locate, read and use system documentation including man, info, and files in /usr/share/doc [Note: Red Hat may use applications during the exam that are not included in Red Hat Enterprise Linux for the purpose of evaluating candidate's abilities to meet this objective.]"
Red Hat gives special warning on this, so I think it extra important for exam. But not in book.

3) "Use single-user mode to gain access to a system"
Listed at start of Chapter 2. Search shows single user mode in Chapter 21 (I search e-book). But nothing in book to get single-user mode, just "appending the command line during boot". Which command line? Where is prompt during boot? Grub or bash?

4) "Modify the system bootloader"
GRUB is system bootloader. I see no example of change to GRUB config file in book.

5) "Configure a system to authenticate using Kerberos"
No words to configure Kerberos client, only "You should also practice connecting a client with Kerberos authentication as well as shadow passwords." Not enough. Where is krb5.conf in book? Important for Kerberos client.

6) "Configure a system as an iSCSI initiator that persistently mounts an iSCSI target"
Not in book.

7) "Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems as virtual guests"
Not in book, unless Virtualbox on exam. Virtualbox is Oracle product.

8) "Configure systems to launch virtual machines on boot"
Not in book.

The text and the labs have an incoherent relationship. Labs have tasks not covered in the chapter and no references are provided for where the lab specific task or knowledge may be obtained. This book is a disappointment.

An extraordinary opportunity awaits humanity

“Inventing the Future” by Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams offers both a practical strategy and hopeful vision of life beyond neoliberalism. The book is a collaboration between Mr. Srnicek, who is a progressive thinker, educator and author with Mr. Williams, who is a brilliant PhD student. The author’s breakthrough analysis suggests that a post-capitalist future is possible.

Srnicek and Williams critique the “folk politics” of today’s Left for its failure to offer a systemic challenge to capitalism. The authors believe an equivalent to the Right’s Mont Pelerin Society is needed to articulate an expansive Leftist vision for a better future. An astute analysis supports the author’s contention that a Euro-centric capitalism must necessarily yield to a new, more encompassing concept of humanity whose “synthetic freedom” will know no boundaries.

Fortunately, Srnicek and Williams offer a strategy to achieve a “post work consensus”. The key components of the strategy include: full automation (to free labor from routine work); a sharply reduced work week; and a universal basic income (UBI). The authors recognize that consensus-building must focus on persuading the media, academia and business of the necessity for change.

On that point, I found Srnicek and Williams’ discussion of the world’s surplus population to be very informative. Capital has no solution to intractable unemployment in the global south that has been caused by a process of proletarianization in an era of post-industrialism. However, the looming prospect of “full unemployment” spreading to the north should be welcomed: humanity has an extraordinary opportunity to break the work ethic and the suffering religiosity of its primitive past. With the benefits of technology freely shared amongst a humanity that has been freed of brutality, greed and competition, one cannot help but be excited about the new horizons that might finally open up for us.

I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

A Source for Hope

When I was reading this, lying in bed my wife asked me what I was reading now – the format of the book is enough that it shook her out of the idea that it was just another book and instead made her ask.

I told her it might be the most important book I ever read. So many books that strike a criticism of the existing world and a future that can come through the mechanisms recommended in the book just have so many holes and they leave me feeling hopeless. But I keep reading them, both in the “Destroy Capitalism” and the “Reform Capitalism” genres. But the authors here have a smart take that make me optimistic view of how we get from here to there. We need a party moving forward the invented future. We need emancipation, a universal income, and we need to watch the rise of the robots. But we need to leverage that rise. The program is incomplete, but it is a foundation. And it is a source for optimism. The kids are all right.

Reclaiming Modernity

In "Inventing The Future" S&W (Srnicek & Williams) show that the transition to a post-capitalist society is less an issue of means than of imagination. S&W help imagine a post-capitalist society, and develop a roadmap towards it. This roadmap is based on a Left-Accelerationist politics and a Laclauian formulation of hegemony. S&W's contribution should be seen as part of a larger debate on 21st Century politics, economics, and society. Proposing the need to break from 20th century versions of Socialism, S&W critique the contemporary Left's emphasis on temporal, spatial, and conceptual immediacy. This means moving beyond what S&W call "Folk Politics": a narrow commitment to horizontalism, localism, consensus, and prefigurative forms of action. S&W's post-capitalist vision is both different from previous experiments, and open-ended as to its establishment. While providing an analysis of the failures of Social Democratic parties, S&W delineate the decades-long work behind the establishment of Neoliberal Hegemony. For William Davies, neoliberalism can be understood as an effort to anchor modernity in the market, or make economics the main measure of progress and reason. S&W propose overcoming Folk Politics by paying close attention to the strategic rise of neoliberal intellectuals - with the 70's Stagflation Crisis as a turning point - like Milton Friedman and Friedrich V. Hayek, organizations like the Mont Pelerin Society, and think tanks like Cato Institute.

For S&W, the Left must "reclaim the future" and build a populist counter-hegemonic force founded on concrete demands. Such demands, which must have a utopian edge and be grounded in real tendencies, can shift the political equilibrium, and build platforms beyond traditional blue-collar unionism and socialist parties. Underpinning these demands is a strategy that envisions change in terms of decades (cultural shifts) rather than years (electoral cycles). S&W, looking at the phenomenon of Premature-Deindustrialization (Contemporary Industrial Societies) and Jobless-Growth (Post-Industrial Societies), show that technological unemployment can create the conditions for increasing "Synthetic Freedom". Achieving Synthetic Freedom, which requires the attainment of Formal Rights & Material Capacities, can be assisted by maximizing automation, reducing the working week (job-sharing), providing a UBI (Universal Basic Income), and adopting a post-work ethic. The outcomes of Premature-Deindustrialization and Jobless-Growth have a direct impact on society, and variations of basic income provision are already being proposed by mainstream policy makers and economists. UBI experiments in Finland, Holland, Uganda, Kenya, and by Y-Combinator, are investigating the effects of a UBI on assistance-efficiency, standards of living, creativity, and leisure time.

With an orientation towards the Future, S&W aim to reclaim the "Empty Signifier of Modernism". Doing so involves reviving Modernist ideals such as freedom, universality, and reason, while decoupling such ideals from their relationship with, for example, colonialism, patriarchy, and imperialism. As expressed by Mark Fisher, much of anti-capitalism has anti-modernist tendencies, and easily slides from anti-statism into anti-politics. For S&W, this requires, as part of a Left modernising project, decoupling desire and technology from Capital, and reclaiming the value of freedom from the Right rather than only focusing on inequality. Synthetic Freedom, already mentioned above, is synthetic in the sense that it is "artificially" produced through the provision of socio-technical infrastructure, rather than through the elimination of social interference. Formal Rights are meaningless without the material capacities needed to exercise them. Following the likes of Paul Mason and Toni Negri, S&W believe that the subject of post-capitalism will emerge in the development of a new "mode of production". This new mode of production is based on a system of technologies such as Allende's bold Cybersin Project, additive manufacturing, automated logistics, social media, alternative currencies, etc. For S&W, such socio-technical infrastructure, which can facilitate "non-market" forms of production, distribution, deliberation, and ownership, can make new ways of seeing ourselves and relating to others possible.

With this book, S&W have influenced important debates we will be having for years to come. S&W's work should be read alongside the work of people like Paul Mason, Mariana Mazzucato, Yochai Benkler, and more.
