About the Author
Michael Reaves received an Emmy Award for his work on the Batman animated television series. He has worked for DreamWorks, among other studios, and has written fantasy novels and supernatural thrillers. Reaves is The New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, as well as the co-writer (with Steve Perry) of the two Star Wars: MedStar novels, Battle Surgeons and Jedi Healer. A Star Wars MASH Unit

"Battle Surgeons" is the first book in the Medstar duology. The action takes place two years after "Attack of the Clones." As can be guessed from the title of both the book and the duology, "Battle Surgeons" gives readers the first true look at a side of the Galaxy that has never been seen before. These battle surgeons are the ones who clean up the messes of all the wars and battles and try to save lives in the midst of a war. Think of it as the Star Wars version of M.A.S.H. and you will have a sense of exactly what "Battle Surgeons" is.

This story takes place on, and around, the planet Drongar. There is some backstory presented that there is a rare plant which can be used as something of a miracle drug for a variety of species throughout the galaxy and the Clone Wars have come to Drongar for the control of this plant/drug. This is the background, but it isn't terribly important because the story is really about the M.A.S.H. unit. The heart of "Battle Surgeons" lies in the interaction between the various surgeons: Jos Vondar, Zan Yant, Tolk le Trene, and the Jedi Padawan Barriss Offee sent to investigate the situation on Drongar. There is, of course, the love interest between Jos and Tolk, which is complicated by their cultural restrictions. But, added to the mix is also the protocol droid I-Five. Readers may remember I-Five from "Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter", which was also written by Michael Reaves. I-Five is a droid which has more human emotional characteristics than most droids, more so than some humans would think possible for a droid. He is also a much more interesting character (on the page) than C-3PO (not in this book). For example, we see I-Five gambling with the other surgeons, holding his own in both the game as well as in the give and take of conversation.

There is a main plot thread about smuggling the rare plant from Drongar, but what makes this story shine is the interactions within the M.A.S.H. unit (if I were more familiar with the show I would be able to extend the analogy to the characters). This is a much funnier book than many of the other Star Wars novels, and while they all use humor, the humor in "Battle Surgeons" felt appropriate and fitting for who the characters are and the situation they are dealing with. Then again, I was prepped for this novel by periodically watching M.A.S.H. reruns over the years. "Battle Surgeons" is an entertaining look into an overlooked part of the Star Wars universe, and one which also sets up the continuing story in "Medstar II: Healer". This volume was good enough that I am looking to read the second volume over many of the other Star Wars novels that have been published.

Better than Oxford (Pinyin users only)

Having studied Chinese for 5 years using the same Oxford dictionary, I thought I could find no better resource in my studies. However, I stumbled upon this dictionary at my university library and have fallen in love. It provides the pinyin accessibility as well as a good radical index for those characters you can't pronounce. It also provides a nice selection of variants with each character - and it's a paperback!
My only complaints are the price (a bit high) and the tiny print. However, I've yet to see a decent Chinese-English dictionary without tiny print.

Larger Print!

The Pinyin Chinese-English Dictionary is by far the easiest to use. The problem with the paperback version is the small and in-distinct print. I wondered if the hardback would have larger print. It does. The print is about twice the size of the paperback. For me it has made all the difference and was well worth the price. The printing is still not the best, but it's far easier to make out than the paperback version. This combined with a 4X dome magnifier and I'm good to go!

In 1966, the Lovin' Spoonful had a #2 hit with "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?" Two years later, Raiffa answered that question for a generation of academics with his book Decision Analysis, whose argumentAthat decision-making skills can be learned and applied as a discipline of their ownAmade Raiffa deeply influential in management and social science. Raiffa (a former professor at Harvard Business School), his longtime associate Hammond (a professor of management and engineering at the University of Southern California) and Ralph Keeney (The Art and Science of Negotiation) here explain decision-analysis techniques and stratagems for the benefit of nonspecialists. They provide substantial, straightforward explanations of concepts (risk tolerance, sunk costs, desirability curves) that sound arcane but may help readers to buy the right car, choose a mutual fund, decide on a school, or plan a vacation. Unfortunately, the lingo of self-help often substitutes for the jargon of management consulting, as when Raiffa's famous five decision steps become the trendy acronym PrOACT. And the example problems can seem clich?d, two-dimensional or implausible, even when based on fact. Nevertheless, recommendations like "Remember that the value of an incremental change depends on what you start with" and "Make sure your subordinates reflect your organization's risk tolerance in their decisions" are, at the least, good reminders that the logic of decision making is often counterintuitive; at best, they are an important, useful set of insights.

The three authors, all of whom come from academic backgrounds and specialize in decision science, argue that "making smart choices is a fundamental life skill" that can be taught. They provide a practical model for decision making and demonstrate that it can be applied in both personal and business situations. They show that the key is to break the decision into its individual elements, identify those that are most important, and analyze potential outcomes. The authors also stress that decisions should be made before they turn into problems. Their so-called PROACTive approach can be broken down mnemonically. Identify the PRoblem, specify the Objectives, create Alternatives, understand the Consequences, and weigh the Trade-offs. Following these steps, one must clarify uncertainty, assess risks, and be aware of what other choices a decision might create. From choosing a career to planning an employee party, the authors use a wide range of examples to demonstrate their approach. David Rouse

I had the pleasure of reading this book last year as assigned material in a graduate business course taught by Ralph Keeney. My degree is in information systems management and, frankly, I took Managerial Decision Analysis only because I needed 3 elective credits to graduate. In retrospect, however, the course was among the most beneficial to me and Smart Choices was certainly the most relevant book I read in graduate school. I say it was the most relevant because it demonstrates how to define problems and make decisions not simply as a business leader, but as an individual. The PROACT approach is a valuable tool for making formal decisions like "Which career path should I choose?" or "Which software package should I recommend to my client?" But the mentality that the approach engenders is pervasive. You will find yourself unwittingly applying elements of it to questions like "How should I spend time with my kids this weekend?" or "What is the best Valentine's Day gift for my wife?" The greatest benefit to me has been the piece of mind that comes with knowing that I don't just make better decisions -- I am now a better decision maker.

Excellent summary of a difficult subject

I have read many books on decision analysis - however, the 3 authors managed to condense the most relevant points in one book, without academic speak. The famous Kahnmann & Tversky's Heuristics and Biases are nicely summarised in the final chapter. The case studies are easy to relate to. Definitely a professional book written for the layman. No need for a PhD to understand this!

A useful guide for systematic decision-making

This is an excellent book. The title may make this appear to be one of the too-numerous mass-market books which claim to offer advice on business and personal decision-making but actually offer lots of specific admonitions which are based on values which the reader may not share (example: anything by Steven Covey). This book, however, doesn't try to sell you any of the the authors' values; instead it teaches you an effective process that you can use to analyze any decision-making situation and make the choices which are most effective for achieving your objectives, whatever they may be. The book treats the subject in the same systematic way that it might be treated in an academic decision theory text, only it is written in plain language which can be read quickly and easily comprehended by the general reader. It finishes with a summary outline (they call it a "roadmap") which is a useful quick reference.

HEFTY TRIBUTE FIT FOR A SPORT'S KING 'Pelé' arrived for an interview strapped to a luggage cart and wheeled around by a publisher named Ovais Naqvi, who parked the parcel in a conference room. Naqvi stripped the tape from the carton to reveal 'Pelé', the megabook, resting inside a silk-covered wooden box. 'Pelé: Edson Arantes do Nascimento' is a Soccer tribute to Pelé, the man who entranced Brazil and the world with his soccer artistry and incandescent personality. When praise for him expanded beyond comparisons to other mortals, his admirers likened him to Saturn, or God. Pelé himself has said that God sent him to earth to play soccer and compared himself to Beethoven. So how better to celebrate the man at 66 than with a silk-swaddled tome of 720 pages that is 2 and three quarter inches thick, weighs 35 pounds and measures nearly 18 by 14 inches? It contains 1,700 images and 300,000 words by numerous sportswriters and interviews with some of Pelé s teammates between covers in the green and yellow of Brazil s national team. Pelé was paid a fee to sign each copy of the book and will receive royalties for providing autobiographical text. 'Other than Muhammad Ali, Pelé is the only other figure who has achieved the same international renown,' said Naqvi, the president and chief executive of Gloria, as he flipped through 'Pelé's glossy pages. Pelé's link to Ali goes beyond their global appeals. In early 2004, Taschen Books published 10,000 copies of 'GOAT: Greatest of All Time,' a 75-pound, 20-by-20-inch book that originally cost from $3,000 to $7,500 (because 1,000 books came with a bizarre porpoise sculpture by Jeff Koons). 'GOAT' has not yet sold out. Naqvi served as an editorial consultant to 'GOAT' and said he understood how to produce industrial-strength luxury books that he believed would produce high profits. Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known to the world as Pele, won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He scored nearly 1,300 goals in his professional career and is Brazil's record goalscorer with 97 goals. He lives in Brazil and the United States.

You will learn a lot on the greatest player ever! Great Book!!!

I found "PELE" a great book. it's often a pleasure to read autobiography of such great player of the past, you will learn so much. Pele talks about his young life before stardom, his whole career with santos and the Seleçao, the story around his 1,000th goal, his life after his football career and so many more. I enjoyed the book!!
