But most small investors are passive, DePorre claims, holding investments for long-term gains, although this conventional investment wisdom results in only mediocre returns and carries the risk of greater loss. Maintaining the shark analogy, he tackles topics such as the myths of Wall Street, understanding market dynamics, portfolio management and how to put everything together, offering cogent, practical advice. Graphs and charts illustrate key points, in addition to a useful glossary. But the shark theme gets old quickly and makes otherwise sound advice appear gimmicky. Good Resource for Improving Collaboration & Connection in the Workplace

Social media is not a passing fancy, it's here to stay. So how can we best work with it - not in spite of it? Tony Bingham and Marcia Conner share their ideas in The New Social Learning, a handbook for how organizations and teams can utilize this tool to improve capacity for learning and growing together. They believe we can learn how to leverage the communities our people are already part of, the social media tools they use on their own personal time, and use them to connect and collaborate with each other and our surrounding communities.

Some highlights: Chapter 3 speaks especially to the importance of community and showing up online. Chapter 4 provides practical ideas for growing your organization's social presence "one bite at a time." Chapter 5 presents some patterns, metrics, and goals to consider in analyzing the effectiveness of your impact and influence online. Chapter 6 was especially helpful for me, as I don't work in the traditional corporate setting. It connects the ideas presented throughout the book to roles outside the workplace - such as attending conferences, speaking at events, or even getting to know someone over a good meal.

This book reminds us to be humble enough to admit we need collaboration from others in almost every endeavor, and not be afraid to be seen asking the community for help, opinions, or ideas. It is a rich repository of ideas, relatable examples, actionable ideas, and engaging quotes. It also includes a thorough list of further reading and helpful glossary of social media terms.

My only disappointment is that, despite a brief consideration in Chapter 6, the majority of the book ignored any type of organization outside the traditional corporate world. I believe the principles and ideas are very useful for non-profits, ministries, etc - but at times it was challenging to dig through the workplace focus and apply those ideas to other settings.

Great book to jump into social learning and putting social media to great use for yourself and your teams!

I’m a learning geek and have taken full advantage of social media to learn something new every day. I was excited to read the book The New Social Learning 2nd Edition by Tony Bingham and Marcia Connor. Social media allows people from all over to share and learn from each other. This book champions the benefits of social learning and how it can be used to further learning, organizations, and teams. What better way to engage with others than to put something “out there” and receive hundreds of ideas and thoughts back? That’s social learning.

Bingham and Conner use real life case examples of how business and industry have used social media to grow, empower, and work with the ever changing workforce. They eloquently aim to prove that social media can really transform companies, talent, and even company culture. They explain what a powerful learning tool social media can be when managed and used to encourage more personal connections. Companies need to embrace new social technologies that focus on the talents of everyone, yet bring people together to share strengths.

There is so much negative criticism of social media and The New Social Learning 2nd Edition meets that challenge head to head. The authors effectively shoot down some of the excuses that organizations quote to not use and encourage social media. They reaffirm that social learning does not happen overnight and that social media is a building block on top of other platforms. Various learning methods all need to intertwine. Social learning doesn’t replace formal education or training. It augments it and brings people together. Social learning brings us the wisdom, knowledge, and new tools to our doorstep from around the world.

I eagerly learned how strong company cultures encourage social learning and how impossible it is to prevent people from using social media. You can’t ignore what is in front of people every day so jump into social media and learning so that it benefits everyone and is used for personal and business betterment. This type of learning allows strong people to do their best work. It personalizes the way that people and leaders interact. It brings skills and connectivity to the next level. Social Learning is the new revolution of learning together to grow together.

Whether you manage a company or teams this is a helpful book to pick up to get you thinking. You may look at social media in a fresh way. You may find that your fears of social media are just that – your fears. You will really see for the first time how social learning can really impact a culture and even change a business model. Social learning may increase profits and market growth. Most importantly, social learning is about people, relationships, growth, and connecting. By the way, social media is free and your learning can be too!

The one area that The New Social Learning won’t guide you is how to actually implement social media and social learning into your company or teams. The book skims over the implementation of social learning and does not offer a step by step plan. This is an area where you will need to seek out the assistance of others or find another learning resource.

It's Worth THAT Much

Social Learning is worth every bit of what you invest in it. If the first edition got you started in social learning in your business or organization, this edition will give you a chance to assess where you are. If you don't think your business or organization is using social learning, you're wrong, and the book will help you to recognize it and to put the research base about social learning to work. If, like me, you read the first edition then, like me, you probably forgot some of what you learned and can use a refresher. The new edition is more than a refresher, it includes new material – because a few new things have been learned – and new examples – because a few new things have happened. I learned and re-learned a lot.

Chapter Six: In-person Learning Reimagined was my favorite because I Chair an annual conference and this chapter was a wealth of ideas and information about setting up a conference for effective social learning. Getting people away from the groups they work and live with every day and providing enough time for reflection will be more prominent at my conference next year. I'll implement the backchannel more effectively. We won't be Burning Man but we will incorporate some of what has been learned there. I haven't had this valuable a resource for thinking about making my conference more effective for years.

I give a lot of books away after I read them. I might give this one away too but, I'll definitely replace it with one I can keep for a reference. It's worth that much.

For example, which type of capitalism engages in job-threatening innovation? Whose innovation widens income inequality? Whose innovation raises productivity? Which type of capitalism has more effective financial markets for innovation? Whose innovators emphasize 'control' rather than 'flexibility' during innovation?

By addressing these questions, the author demonstrates that the way nations innovate often has deep, and sometimes counter-intuitive, implications for how they compare in many areas of socio-economic performance. For example, although venture capital is most active in Anglo-Saxon economies, it seems that venture-capital performance in stimulating innovation is also poorest in precisely these countries. On the issue of employment, the author argues that, whilst technological innovation in Anglo-Saxon economies creates jobs, innovation in European economies destroys jobs. Nations also differ in the nature of income inequality driven by innovation. While innovation pushes top earners further ahead of median earners in Anglo-Saxon economies, it drags bottom earners further behind the median in European economies. Finally, varieties of capitalism also differ in their ability to cope with the volatilities of innovation. While Anglo-Saxon economies face a trade-off between low volatility and high innovation output, these two goals seem jointly achievable in European economies.

About the Author

Jingjing Huo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science, University of Waterloo. He obtained his PhD in Political Science from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. His research focuses on the political economy of advanced industrialized countries, especially technological innovation and labor market policies. He has published a book with Cambridge University Press (2009) on labor market policies in advanced industrialized countries, as well as various articles on technological innovation and social policies, in journals such as Comparative Political Studies, Socio-Economic Review, and Journal of European Social Policy.

The National Security Agency funded a conference on Coding theory, Cryp tography, and Number Theory (nick-named Cryptoday) at the United States Naval Academy, on October 25-27, 1998. We were very fortunate to have been able to attract talented mathematicians and cryptographers to the meeting. Unfortunately, some people couldn't make it for either scheduling or funding reasons. Some of these have been invited to contribute a paper anyway. In addition, Prof. William Tutte and Frode Weierud have been kind enough to allow the inclusion of some very interesting unpublished papers of theirs. The papers basically fall into three catagories. Historical papers on cryp tography done during World War II (Hatch, Hilton, Tutte, Ulfving, and Weierud), mathematical papers on more recent methods in cryptography (Cosgrave, Lomonoco, Wardlaw), and mathematical papers in coding theory (Gao, Joyner, Michael, Shokranian, Shokrollahi). A brief biography of the authors follows. - Peter Hilton is a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Emeritus at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He worked from 1941 to 1945 in the British cryptanalytic headquarters at Bletchley Park. Profes sor Hilton has done extensive research in algebraic topology and group theory. - William Tutte is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus and an Adjunct Pro fessor in the Combinatorics and Optimization Department at the Univer sity of Waterloo. He worked from 1941 to 1945 in the British cryptana lytic headquarters at Bletchley Park. Professor Tutte has done extensive research in the field of combinatorics.

These are the proceedings of the Conference on Coding Theory, Cryptography, and Number Theory held at the U. S. Naval Academy during October 25-26, 1998. This book concerns elementary and advanced aspects of coding theory and cryptography. The coding theory contributions deal mostly with algebraic coding theory. Some of these papers are expository, whereas others are the result of original research. The emphasis is on geometric Goppa codes (Shokrollahi, Shokranian-Joyner), but there is also a paper on codes arising from combinatorial constructions (Michael). There are both, historical and mathematical papers on cryptography. Several of the contributions on cryptography describe the work done by the British and their allies during World War II to crack the German and Japanese ciphers (Hamer, Hilton, Tutte, Weierud, Urling). Some mathematical aspects of the Enigma rotor machine (Sherman) and more recent research on quantum cryptography (Lomonoco) are described. There are two papers concerned with the RSA cryptosystem and related number-theoretic issues (Wardlaw, Cosgrave).

A Critical Book for Our Epoch

This is one of the most critical books for our epoch. According to Trotsky, the working class can lead humanity out of its impasse of war and oppression, if it has a tested communist leadership. He puts forward a program for such a leadership to inspire workers with the confidence that as a class we can seize power from the destructive capitalist class. With his strategic sense of history, he paints a picture of the leadership tests that will occur as workers try to defend themselves, against unemployment, inflation, war, or against the secret strikebreaking or fascist gangs of the capitalists. A revolutionary communist party must prepare for revolutionary times now. Revolutionaries who wait have always failed. This book is totally grounded in Trotsky's experience at the side of Lenin during the Russian Revolution and the early revolutionary years of the Communist International. Among the interesting and very relevant sections is one on how the revolutionary party can guide the working class to achieve unity with farmers, since these two exploited classes are taught to distrust each other under capitalism. The definitive guide for pre-2000 minor league sets. No other published book comes close.

Despite being listed as the "Premier Edition", it is, in fact, the ONLY edition. That said, it is simply the most comprehensive reference book for minor league baseball cards through early 2000. In no other book will you find this many minor league sets listed in their entirety. Even for anyone picking up later editions of the larger Standard Catalog, this volume is still essential, as the later, larger books eliminate the complete checklists for newer sets in favor of simply listed the set names and card quantities per set.

It is a crime against the hobby that there was never a later edition of this work published, but I understand the economics involved and the extremely narrow target audience. Sports Collectors Digest follows up their 1,664-page "Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards" with another informative price guide, this 480-page guide specifically covers minor league cards. SCD has done their homework with this guide as well, publishing more information on more sets than any other price guides available. I highly recommend this book!

I collect all of the Red Sox minor league teams, and this book helped me identify all of those team sets, plus provided a name-by-name breakdown of players on all of the prospects and all-star sets. If you are a team collector, you will love this book!

Just as hilarious and adorable as volume one. First couple pages are in color again, and the pictures are still arranged 4-koma style.
In this book, we get to see more timelines (and the Homura bar), and we also get to experience some of them via other Homuras.

The Kindle version is only vol 2

On the whole, Henry Stephens's Book of the Farm offers excellent and in depth insight into farming during the Mid 19th Century. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of agriculture and to modern day organic farmers. This book has a lot of information that can be gleaned and applied to small scale organic farms in operation today. I'm very impressed with how efficient some of these so called low-tech methods are compared to our current mechanised practices.

The Kindle version of the book is somewhat lacking (at the time of writing this review). It is only Vol. 2 of the two volume set of the unabridged version of the Book of the Farm. As far as I can tell it is missing the first half of the book.

The kindle version does have at least some of the gorgeous illustrations which show up really nicely on my kindle (version 3).

Until the Kindle version of this book is fixed, I would recommend the abridged version of Henry Stephens's Book of the Farm, edited by Alex Langlands. Although not available for kindle at this time, this edition provides a detailed overview of the full book and great coloured illustrations.

Always leave them wanting more?

Overall, I think this is an excellent sourcebook. I can't compare this to previous boxed sets, for two reasons: 1) I'm relatively new to Greyhawk; and 2) just about every campaign product more than 2 years old is now out of print. But here's my quick rundown.
The Good -- At 192 pages, this is a very comprehensive guide. It's organized in much the same way as the D&D Gazetteer, only in much greater detail. While a lot of this material (especially the history of the Flanaess) has been covered previously, the country descriptions make up the heart of the book. You get at least a full page for each country, breaking down the cities, religions, politics, economy and more. Want the stats for the head of one of the noble houses of Ahlissa? It's here. Wondering how many orcs live in the Pomarj? No problem. The section on Greyhawk's pantheon of gods is equally in-depth, expanding on the information in the Player's Handbook. I also thought including the color heraldry for each country was a nice touch. The world map is essentially a larger version of the D&D Gazetteer map, only with hexes and more cities indicated. Good, but not great.
The Bad -- There's more here on the organizations of the Flanaess than in the D&D Gazetteer, but nowhere near enough as far as I'm concerned. For example, I figured the Knights of the Hart would be treated like a prestige class. However, there are no guidelines or prerequisites for characters to join such groups. It simply says they're actively searching for new members. While this may be covered in an upcoming product, it should be here.
The Ugly -- I have mixed feelings about Wizards of the Coast turning over Greyhawk to the RPGA. Putting the campaign world in the hands of players is a good thing. (After all, players sustained Greyhawk while TSR was neglecting it.) At the same time, it seems like some details are being reserved for the Living Greyhawk campaign. And that's not for everyone. Greyhawk adventures once made up the heart of D&D. I'd hate to see such a rich product line dry up completely.
If you like campaigning in the world of Greyhawk, this is probably an essential buy. Taken as a whole, it's extremely well-done and deserves a strong recommendation. We'll just have to see if there's more to come.

A 'must have' for any serious Greyhawk DM!

An excellent resource book on the World of Greyhawk setting -- A 'must have' for any serious Greyhawk DM!
If you want to DM a Greyhawk campaign, don't waste your time with the smaller D&D Gazetteer -- it has many grossly misleading errors in it and is merely a botched abridgment of this book -- get this one. And don't let the RPGA logo turn you off, this is quality material.
We are most fortunate that some of the most knowledgeable Greyhawk scholars put this thing together for us, people that really care about the Greyhawk setting; and their love of the world shows in the craftsmanship of this book. Erik, Gary, Fred, and Sean did a magnificent job given the time constraints and other challenges that they worked under! Pity they weren't given a greater word count allowance to pack even more in.
This is a world book detailing the setting -- that's why it's called a Gazetteer! It is not a book filled with monsters, magic items, and spells. Nor is it a book for power mongering players looking for new ways to munchkin-max their PCs. It doesn't really deal with D&D game mechanics, instead it largely focuses on detailing the world itself so that it can be used with any roleplaying system (e.g., I myself prefer the HERO SYSTEM over D&D now, but this book's value is not diminished for me because of this).
While it doesn't replace an entire library of old out-of-print Greyhawk books it does offer some new information and no other book gives so much information on the World of Greyhawk setting -- if that is what you're looking for, then this is definately the book for you!
That said, I don't think that the book is perfect. I only give it 4.5 stars instead of 5 because I have some minor quibbles with the interpretations and extrapolations made by the authors in a few places (but these are only minor complaints between fellow scholars). And I further reduce that to 4 stars because it wasn't what it could have, and should have, been -- 256 page hardcover with a map equal to the old Darlene map from the Folio/Boxed Set in terms of size and paper quality.
Still, I'm amazed that WotC let something this good get published without butchering it. I can only hope that a deluxe hardcover version with a greater page count, and text density will be published sometime in the future.
If you also like what you see in this book, I'd strongly recommend joining the RPGA just so that you can get the bi-monthly LIVING GREYHAWK JOURNAL which continues to provide quality material. These and the LIVING GREYHAWK GAZETTEER are the only sources of information that you'll see published on Greyhawk for some time.
In short, if you want to DM in Greyhawk, then do yourself, and your players, a favour: get this book and join the legions of Greyhawk fans..

The GH book I always wanted....

Ive been playing in Greyhawk for over 13 years now. I remember buying the old boxed set many years ago with birthday money. Cracking that pristine box open and looking upon the works of Pluffet Smedger (the Eldar, of course), unfolding the beautiful maps..... Greyhawk has persisted as my favorite fantasy rpg setting since that day; outlasting childhood, adolescence, girlfriends, 5 years in the USMC, 6 years of marriage, several jobs, dozens of friends and acquaintences, more gaming groups than I can count on two hands, and relocations around the US and jaunts overseas. Even when the setting was kicked to the curb by T$R and went 'underground' for too long a time; even when met with the uncomprehending stares of Forgotten Realms players when trying to get a game going, I stuck with my old favorite setting to the bitter end if need be.
Greyhawk is synonymus with FRPG in my mind. Thru major campaigns and story arcs, even conversion to another game system my love of the setting has continued to the present day.
So, suffice it to say Ive got an investment in the setting of both time and emotion, and thus am not exactly an unbiased reviewer.
With all of that said, as empirically and objectively as I can manage, I must give the LGG a full 5 stars. On a 1 to 10 scale it might be a 9, due primarily to overall lower quality intererior art, but such a nick isnt worth 20% on a 1 to 5 scale; thus on a scale of 1 to 5, the LGG goes the distance.
Why such a high rating? Because this is the book that Ive wanted so many times over the years, feverishly detailing campaigns and sessions with too little time and too many widely scattered sources of material, or worse a total lack of material period. This book manages to coalesce many of the crucial Greyhawk canonical works into one quality product while expanding material in many places, fabricating new material in others, and somehow managing to bridge the gap between the oftentimes widely different 'eras' of pre-Carl Sargent and post-Carl Sargent work (for the record, Im mostly pro-Carl Sargent).
While I have run & played in many Greyhawk campaigns, I persist the events of past campaigns in my version of Greyhawk; including material that I have had to make up over the years to fill gaps in the printed canon or altered canon to fit my purposes, and the actions of PCs from various groups. Therefore there are discrepencies between 'my version' and the official canon as Im sure is true of many other DMs Greyhawk campaigns, but that is hardly a fault on the part of the writers and thanx to the largely modular approach taken by the design team I can easily snap in replacement sections where needed without unduly skewing all other relevant material.
I remember Erik Mona and Gary Holian from the days of GreyTalk; in fact, I played in a play-by-email rendition of the classic Slavers module run by Gary Holian briefly many years ago. They both have grass roots-level history with Greyhawk, and it shows. Though I will likely never meet either, I feel indebted to them both for providing this book, which is obviously a labor of love, to the community in general and me specifically.
To sum up, all players and DMs who have an interest in Greyhawk should check this book out, and all Greyhawkers both old-school and those who prefer From the Ashes on owe it to themselves to buy this book. Let me say it again. ALL GREYHAWKERS SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK.
Now that's about as gushy of a review as Ive ever given, but I cant stress my appreciation of this product enough. Oerth lives in the shadow of its over-commercialized successor Faerun and there is likely little we can ever do about that. Nevertheless the setting has survived in the hearts and homes of its fans for a very long time even when excommunicated by its original publisher, and with a quality product like this new players and old alike can reap the benefit of what has come before while pressing on to forge new adventures in the FRPG world which started it all.
