The first sentence of this essay, which was originally published in T. S. Eliot's New Criterion, in 1926, includes references to both the consolations of angels and the indignities of the dentist's chair, and this almost gleeful waywardness is characteristic of what's to come. By turns lyrical, self-mocking, and outlandish, Woolf's meditation on the perils and privileges of the sickbed lampoons the loneliness that makes one "glad of a kick from a housemaid" and extolls the merits of bad literature for the unwell. As Hermione Lee points out in her excellent introduction, the author only hints here at the mental and physical illnesses that plagued her throughout her life, but one's knowledge of them gives the references to "waters of annihilation" and "deserts of the soul" an added resonance. And yet the consolations of creation are also considered. When Woolf imagines beauty in a frozen-over garden, even after the death of the sun—"There, thrusting its head up undaunted in the starlight, the rose will flower, the crocus will burn"—it seems less a triumph of nature than of art.

Woolf's essays, most famously A Room of One's Own, have been as liberating and nourishing as a freshening wind or drought-ending rain, and so the resurrection of this forgotten work on illness is a boon indeed. Written between two of Woolf's greatest novels, Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse, this is Woolf at her spangled best. Seemingly a cascade of gossamer thoughts, her prose is in fact as tightly knit, strongly patterned, impervious, and purposeful as a fisherman's sweater. Woolf wonders why illness, which is as much a part of life as love and greed, is not a common theme in literature, then reveals its import in lyrical yet ironic descriptions of illness' slow-motion parallel world, where the afflicted have time to watch the sky or carefully observe a rose. Illness is an altered state, says Woolf, who suffered from myriad chronic conditions, one that grants significant revelations. Insightfully and eloquently introduced by renowned Woolf biographer Hermione Lee, this scintillating and important addition to the Woolf canon is graced by Vanessa Bell's cover for the 1930 Hogarth Press edition. MUST READ

On Being Ill is a small masterpiece. This is a unique book--compassionate, intelligent, affirming, and comforting, both for the "healthy" among us, and those who have experienced illness. This is Woolf at her best: brilliant, daring, probing, and Hermione Lee's Introduction is a gem.
Also, for those of us who care about design, the book is a beauty, a work of art in itself.

A precious gift to readers

From its magnificent cover, to its brilliant and sensitive insights into the psychology of illness--being ill, being near someone who is ill, anticipating being ill or well again--this book is a jewel. I love the way it feels in my hands. I love the way my eyes roam over the pages. I love the way it feels beneath my pillow. I've given it to friends and they have given it to their friends. And I am so pleased that Paris Press--"beautiful and daring feminist books"--has reprinted it as Woolf and Vanessa Bell intended. Precious!

Excellent, Easy-to-Use Workbook for Organizations Engaged in Strategic Planning Process

When our organization decided to engage in the strategic planning process, I reviewed a myriad of resources, and I believe that this workbook is the best. Not only does it explain the planning process well, but it offers a variety of paths through which to pursue planning, making it useful for any organization at any stage of growth. Plus, the worksheets are a great addition. Overall, the workbook has helped our planning process tremendously.

A blueprint for planning the future

A good workhorse of a book which takes you through the steps of creating a strategic plan for your organization. A little sketchy in some areas but does provide great worksheets to action all the stages. I particularly liked the emphasis on trying to be realistic in your approach and in the resources needed.

Across the Border to Spook Country

For the last few decades, William Gibson, who grew up in Virginia and elsewhere in the United States, has lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, just across the border from Amazon.com's Seattle headquarters, which made for a short drive for a lunchtime interview before the release of Spook Country. We met just a few miles from where the storylines of the new novel, in a rare scene set in Gibson's own city, converge. You can read the full transcript of the interview, in which we discussed, among other things, writing in the age of Google, visiting the Second Life virtual world, the possibilities of science fiction in an age of rapid change, and his original proposal for Spook Country, which we have available for viewing on our site. Amazon.com: Could you start by telling us a little bit about the scenario of the new book?

William Gibson: It's a book in which shadowy and mysterious characters are using New York's smallest crime family, a sort of boutique operation of smugglers and so-called illegal facilitators, to get something into North America. And you have to hang around to the end of the book to find out what they're doing. So I guess it's a caper novel in that regard.

Amazon.com: The line on your last book, Pattern Recognition was that the present had caught up with William Gibson's future. So many of the things you imagined have come true that in a way it seems like we're all living in science fiction now. Is that the way you felt when you came to write that book, that the real world had caught up with your ideas?

Gibson: Well, I thought that writing about the world today as I perceive it would probably be more challenging, in the real sense of science fiction, than continuing just to make things up. And I found that to absolutely be the case. If I'm going to write fiction set in an imaginary future now, I'm going to need a yardstick that gives me some accurate sense of how weird things are now. 'Cause I'm going to have to go beyond that. And I think over the course of these last two books--I don't think I'm done yet--I've been getting a yardstick together. But I don't know if I'll be able to do it again. I don't know if I'll be able to make up an imaginary future in the same way. In the '80s and '90s--as strange as it may seem to say this--we had such luxury of stability. Things weren't changing quite so quickly in the '80s and '90s. And when things are changing too quickly, as one of the characters in Pattern Recognition says, you don't have any place to stand from which to imagine a very elaborate future.

Amazon.com: Now that you're writing about the present, do you consider yourself a science fiction writer these days? Because the marketplace still does.

Gibson: I never really believed in the separation. But science fiction is definitely where I'm from. Science fiction is my native literary culture. It's what I started reading, and I think the thing that actually makes me a bit different than some of the science fiction writers I've met who are my own age is that I discovered Edgar Rice Burroughs and William Burroughs in the same week. And I started reading Beat poets a year later, and got that in the mix. That really changed the direction. But it seems like such an old-fashioned way of looking at things. And it's better not to be pinned down. It's a matter of where you're allowed to park. If you can park in the science fiction bookstore, that's good. If you can park in the other bookstore, that's really good. If people come and buy it at Amazon, that's really good.

I'm sure I must have readers from 20 years ago who are just despairing of the absence of cyberstuff, or girls with bionic fingernails. But that just the way it is. All of that stuff reads so differently now. I think nothing dates more quickly than science fiction. Nothing dates more quickly than an imaginary future. It's acquiring a patina of quaintness even before you've got it in the envelope to send to the publisher.

Amazon.com: So do you think that's your own career path, that you're less interested in imagining a future, or do you think that the world is changing?

Gibson: I think it's actually both. Until fairly recently, I had assumed that it was me, me being drawn to use this toolkit I'd acquired when I was a teenager, and using my old SF toolkit in some kind of attempt at naturalism, 21st-century naturalistic fiction. But over the last five to six years it's started to seem to me that there's something else going on as well, that maybe we're in what the characters in my novel Idoru call a "nodal point," or a series of them. We're in a place where things could just go anywhere. A couple of weeks ago I happened to read Charlie Stross's argument as to why he believes that there will never, ever be any manned space travel. It's not going to happen. We're not going to colonize Mars. All of that is just a big fantasy. And it's so convincing. I read that and I'm like, "My god, there goes so much of the fiction I read as a child."

I didn't just read this book, I experienced it. Wow!

Once in a great while a book comes along that transcends the events written about and explains something of deep and cosmic importance. I was stunned by the real story, uncoiling like an invisible serpent of stars, behind the "on the page" story of a woman hired to possibly write for a new magazine, and a parallel story of intrigue amongst a motley collection of spies. These stories coil around each other like a DNA helix to create a new being, a glimpse into a future that could go so wrong or incredibly right. This is Hollis in Wonderland as told by Gibson, a sci-fi cyber punk writer of epic proportions. I am practically obsessed with this book, both in print and the audio read in an intimate and engaging way by the incomparable Robertson Dean. The story is interdimensional, with so many levels to explore I can get lost in a single sentence like a maze that opens doors in my own mind. I didn't just read this book, I experienced it like a psychedelic trip down a white Lego lined rabbit hole.

William Gibson, I am so disappoint. :(

I was excited to read this book. William Gibson is one of my favorite authors. When he stopped writing cyberpunk scifi, I was skeptical, but I gave his non-sf novel "Pattern Recognition" a try anyway, and I'm glad I did. It took a while to get into, but once I did, I couldn't put it down! Since "Spook Country" takes place in the same world, I was prepared for the story to start out slow. After all, I stuck with "Pattern Recognition" for over 50 pages before it got interesting, and I was rewarded.

"Spook Country" still had me waiting at over 200 pages. There was next to no plot, and I didn't care at all about the characters. Chapters are hardly that-- just little insignificant snapshots of these characters' daily lives. It seemed more like an experimental writing exercise than a novel. Don't get me wrong-- sometimes that sort of thing can work, but in this case it didn't.

If I had to wade through over half of the book, no amount of awesome plot twist will be able to make up for the painful experience of reading those first 200 pages. I went through hell with this book. I tried to keep on going-- I really did. I wanted to like this book because it was written by William Gibson. However, the truth is that it's terrible, and I sighed with relief when I finally decided to give up on it-- "Finally, reading can be FUN again!"

hard to get engaged

This was a book for bookgroup or I would not have finished it. I found it very difficult to become engaged and never did. What put me off is that the character development is very superficial, and, I wasn't remotely interested in any of the characters. They seemed like randomly generated one dimensional people (maybe this is part of Gibson's message, which is clearly something to do with technology and its advancement). That brings me to the second issue that made the book not enjoyable for me. I couldn't really figure out if it had any point, meaning or even a theme except for perhaps general confusion in this chaotic, technological world.

There is a goal the characters are working towards (well, some of them). I don't think I should state the goal though because it is kind of the main center of the plot and would give it away (I think. . . ). Other characters motives and drives seem largely enigmatic. Lots of questions raised about the nature of reality, but I wasn't quite sure what the questions were or what the novel had to say about them. My confusion could just be a lack of knowledge about technology and computers and their insidious insinuation into our lives (which is also a theme, I think).

Amazing Book

I was beyond excited to read this book for the Sunday Street Team. I think more people should tell darker stories, because they exist in our world. This was an amazing book. The writing was heartbreakingly beautiful. I received a copy from Netgalley to review, and ended up giving this book 5 out of 5 stars.

As soon as I picked up this book, I pretty much didn’t want to put it down…except to take some breaks when my heart felt like it had cracked open in my chest. The book wasn’t all darkness, but it definitely wasn’t a happy book. Which is fine with me, because life isn’t sunshine and daisies 24/7. Charlie’s story, and even a lot of the secondary characters stories, will resonate with a lot of people.

I absolutely loved Charlie’s character. She seemed so real. My heart ached for her, and the people surrounding her, that have to deal with inner and outer demons. I really liked a lot of the female characters in this book, but barely any of the male characters–except a couple. A lot of the guys were jackasses. Charlie goes through so much in this book, and by the end, I’m glad she has people she can turn to, people she can rely on.

Honestly, I think everyone should read this book. It reminds you that sometimes bad things–overwhelming things–happen. But with some supportive friends, you can embrace life to its fullest. One of my favorite things about this book is that you can feel the raw pain and emotion. Kathleen wasn’t scared to show the downs of life, to show how the tornado building inside you can lash out at any moment.

I made notes of some gorgeous lines while reading: “We all have our Kiefer stages, when we want to destroy ourselves in order to create. To see if that’s beautiful, too.” and “I say the wrong thing, if I can bring myself to say anything at all. I’ve always felt like an intrusion, a giant blob of wrong.” and “I’m so unwhole. I don’t know where all the pieces of me are, how to fit them together, how to make them stick. Or if I even can.”

Final note: An amazing book. It’s definitely dark, but it has an optimistic ending. I’m so glad I read this book. As soon as I finished reading, I bought myself a copy for my personal collection. I’d highly recommend this one.

FIVE STARS! Beautiful. Broken. Believable.

This is one of those books you just can't put down (though I did a few times because all that other stuff--like parenting--got in the way). The author's style of writing was so perfect for this story, almost disjointed in parts, giving us little glimpses, bits and pieces of the main character and her history. GIRL IN PIECES isn't about romance, by any means, but must add that I truly loved the tragic love story happening as a secondary plot line.

I don't know how to sum up this book in a quick and easy way, so I will leave you with this: GIRL IN PIECES is all at once tragic and hopeful, heartbreaking and revitalizing, depressing and uplifting. It combines all of these emotions and more into one HELL of a story and one HELL of a main character. Charlie is the girl next door. She's the little girl you keep tucked deep down inside. She's the girl who sits next to you in class, quiet and invisible, but wanting so much to be loved, to find her voice and reach out. She's the woman you know down the street. Her secrets may not be the same as yours, but you know her, and you instantly connect with her.

Our scars may not all be the same, many of them not even visible, but we all have them, and we will always be united in that, no matter our differences.

Charlie's story is inspiring, as is Kathleen Glasgow. I can't wait to read more of her work.

Powerful, heartbreaking and empowering

I found ‘Girl in Pieces’ such a powerful, eye-opening story and I’m so glad that Kathleen Glasgow decided to write it. I think it’s so important for us to hear more of these kinds of voices, to become more aware and develop a greater understanding of mental illness. Beautiful photos but poor instructions

Not quite what I expected. Beautiful photos but poor instructions. I will be able to make some clothing because I am a very experienced sewist. But my students who want to use these patterns will need a ton of guidance. The designs are not as interesting either as the book preview suggests.

Don't order e-reader version of book

I just finished reading and have decided which design to start sewing. However, I purchased the kindle version which appears to me to have been a mistake. I am unable to download the patterns - hence the book is kind of worthless without the patterns. I think Amazon and the publisher should ensure patterns are printable before offering an e-reader version of a publication.

Wonderful edgy clothing. These patterns seem more complex than other japanese pattern books so I haven't yet attempted any. But I can read this book over and over because it's so beautiful!

Grouping the integumentary, skeletal, and muscular systems together in chapter 9 may confuse readers, as these tissues primarily arise from different primordia. The extensive passages on molecular processes and signaling pathways may be daunting to readers lacking a foundation in molecular biology or genetics, and the book would benefit from placing these sections under separate subheadings. Everything you need and nothing you don't need!

This is a great supplemental review book for Human Embryology and Developmental Biology. It's a great book to have right next to your Embryology and Developmental Biology class notes. The illustrations and explanations are detailed and make this a fabulous addition to a first-year medical student's library. It a super supplement and can make the more dense textbooks of Human Embryology understandable. This book can also stand on its own as a refresher for those folks out of medical school and those in medical school that just need more understanding of the concepts. This book is priced well and can help the struggling student. I highly recommend it.

As a craniofacial surgeon with a specialty in the developmental biology of the head and neck there is no better place to start than Carlson. I have followed this text over the years from its 2nd edition and it just gets better. Lucid explanations with up to date references. This is the perfect companion to Scott Gilbert's Developmental Biology. They should be read in sequence. As readers of the fifth edition, we think you will be pleased with the changes and additions that have been made. Much of this is due to the fact that two new co-authors have been added to the text. As the first author, I feel profoundly blessed to have two gifted and caring family nurses join me in updating and enriching the fifth edition's content and presentation. Dr. Vicky Bowden is a well-known nursing author, practitioner, and educator. Dr. Elaine Jones is also very experienced and expert in family nursing education, practice, and research with families with deaf members. Their positive contributions have made revising this text an exciting and very positive endeavor. We each revised about one third of the chapters, but carefully reviewed and made suggestions to the primary revisor on the other chapters to make them more comprehensive and relevant.

Great strides have been made in the field of family nursing since this text's inception in 1980 and the additions and changes in this text parallel family nursing's growth. There has been a proliferation of texts in family nursing that contain in-depth discussions of theories, research, and practice. The increase in publications about family nursing; the inception of the Journal of Family Nursing in 1995; the growing incorporation of family nursing into ANA Standards of Nursing Practice, NANDA nursing diagnoses, and the Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC); the holding of national and international family nursing conferences; the continuing activity of the family and health section of the National Council for Family Relations; and the increase in family nursing courses and content in both undergraduate and graduate nursing programs present strong evidence of the development of family nursing as both an integral part of generalist practice and as a specialty area in advanced practice nursing. Moreover, there is a growing consensus that family nursing is conceptually and empirically distinct from nursing of family members. And due to the profound influence of family therapy and the application of systems theory, family nurses are increasingly "thinking interactionally" in their writings and conversations about families and family nursing practice.

The text's focus in the fifth edition includes nursing diagnoses and interventions. In this edition, as previous editions, the same basic comprehensive family assessment tool is presented, with some modification. The family assessment model is based primarily on three theoretical perspectives: a systems perspective, a structural-functional perspective, and a family developmental perspective. A multicultural perspective is also integrated throughout.

This text is intended for undergraduate and graduate family nursing students and practitioners who are not practicing advanced family therapy or family systems nursing. Advanced family nursing practice requires the completion of a specialized program at the master's level. Hence, we included family nursing interventions that are basic and straightforward; these suggested interventions, although certainly necessary within family nursing practice, are insufficient for working with the very complex family in which more sophisticated, indirect interviewing and advanced counseling skills are required.

In the fifth edition of this text, the following new features have been added:

• The latest NANDA (North American Nursing Diagnosis Association) and NIC (Nursing Interventions Classification) descriptions are incorporated.

CONTENT NEW TO THE FIFTH EDITION

This book is subdivided into four broad sections. Part I includes two introductory chapters that discuss the family's importance and family definitions (Chapter 1) and family nursing's evolution, focus, and goals (Chapter 2). In Chapter 1, the sections outlining demographic trends impacting the family and the varied family forms have been updated and enlarged. The chapter on family nursing (Chapter 2) covers the gamut of emerging goals and roles of the family nurse from health promotion through rehabilitation. The rising costs of medical care; the implementation of managed care; the rising proportion of older, chronically ill individuals; and the recognition that many chronic illnesses can be prevented or ameliorated with lifestyle changes are prominent trends that have greatly expanded the role of the family nurse in both health promotion and acute and long-term care. Several major current issues facing family nursing facilitate our understanding of the status of family nursing today.

Part II addresses the basic theoretical foundations of family nursing (Chapters 3 through 6) . Chapter 3, "Theoretical Foundations of Family Nursing," reviews the various theories used in family nursing practice, with much better coverage of nursing theories than in the previous edition. Integrated family nursing theories are also described and advocated. Chapter 4 is a short chapter describing structural-functional theory and how it has been applied in this text. Chapter 5, "Family Developmental Theory" has been revised and updated to include a broader range of developmental theories. In this chapter, family developmental theory is applied to single-parent and stepparent families, in addition to the two-parent nuclear family. Chapter 6, "Systems Theory," contains greater coverage of holism, cybernetics, and communication theory as more focused, midrange theories subsumed under general systems theory.

Part III introduces the reader to the family nursing process as well as the actual family assessment model or tool (located within each of the individual chapters), family nursing diagnoses, and family nursing interventions. Chapter 7, "The Family Nursing Process," has been updated and revised, combining two chapters from the previous edition of the text into one chapter that is more comprehensive and includes a very thorough discussion of family nursing interventions. Chapter 7 covers the new literature appearing in the counseling, education, case management, and family nursing process areas. Chapter 8, "Family Identifying Data: Sociocultural Assessment and Intervention," discusses family nursing in the context of sociocultural diversity. Updating of statistical data and literature on the significant demographic changes taking place in America provide a greater understanding about the urgency of practicing competently with families from diverse backgrounds.

In the remainder of the practice chapters (Chapters 9 through 16) pertinent research, theory, and practice implications have been incorporated. These chapters address family structural dimensions; family functions; and family stress, coping, and adaptation. Family structural dimensions are crucial to family nursing practice, since they cover family dynamics as seen in family communication patterns and processes (Chapter 10), family power and decision making (Chapter 11), the family role structure (Chapter 12), and family values (Chapter 13). The affective function (Chapter 14), family socialization function (Chapter 15), and the health care function (Chapter 16) are the three most relevant family functions to assess in family nursing. Family stress, coping processes, and adaptation (Chapter 17) are also essential components within family nursing assessment and intervention.

Chapter 9, "Family Environmental Data," has new sections on resources in the home (such as Internet access), discussion of differences in rural versus urban family environment, an updated section on the effects of homelessness on family health, and a new section focusing on the sociopolitical environment as an important factor in family health.

Chapter 10, "Family Communication Patterns and Processes," contains both classic and recent research and theoretical content related to functional and dysfunctional family communication patterns. This chapter also discusses the influence of cultural beliefs, family life cycle stage, gender, family form, and family mini-culture on- family communication patterns.

Chapter 11, "Family Power and Decision Making," presents foundational concepts in family power. Discussion of family violence is now included in this chapter, with specific sections addressing intimate partner abuse, child and adolescent abuse, sibling abuse, parent abuse, and elder abuse.

Chapter 12, "Family Role Structure," focuses on research on family role changes during illness, with an expanded discussion about the family caregiver role, and the role of the father in contemporary families. A particular strength is the expanded section about grandparents' roles in families, especially grandmothers who are involved in raising grandchildren.

Chapter 13, "Family Values," contains new information regarding changes in family values that have emerged in recent years as a result of societal changes. Disparities in value systems are discussed, especially those that exist between the family and the health care professional.

Chapter 14, "The Family Affective Function," reviews essential components of the affective function. The chapter covers the process of family bereavement more thoroughly than in the previous editions.

In Chapter 15, "The Family Socialization Function," findings are incorporated from the latest socialization research. There is also broadened coverage of multicultural aspects of parenting, and unique socialization issues for single-parent families, stepparent families, and families with gay or lesbian parents.

In Chapter 16, "The Family Health Care Function," the critical thrust of family health promotion is clearly evident, with Pender's revised Health Promotion Model providing the theoretical foundation for identifying the multiple factors influencing family health promotion. Recent research findings on health care practices among families, such as lifestyle practices and the use of medically based and alternative/complementary health care, have also been incorporated.

A major revamping of the content within Chapter 17, now titled "Family Stress, Coping, and Adaptation" occurred. The Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment, and Adaptation is fully described, and other research and theoretical developments in the area of family stress and coping have been updated. Family resiliency, family coherence, and factors influencing coping are emphasized. In addition, social support research, theory, and clinical application have been added to this chapter.

In Part IV (Chapters 18, 19, and 20), cultural differences among families from the three largest minority groups in the United States, Latino, African-American, and Asian-American, are addressed. Current literature about each of these families, coupled with an expanded description of family nursing assessment and interventions that are culturally sensitive and appropriate, make these chapters quite useful for working with culturally diverse clients. Chapter 20, "The Asian-American Family," was a new chapter in the fourth edition, and is a reflection of the growing presence of Asian-Americans in the United States today. Their Eastern legacy is so disparate from our Western tradition that family nurses who work with traditional Asian-Americans need to be sensitive to these profound cultural differences.

The Appendices contain the Friedman Family Assessment Model (long form and short form), a family case description and the use of the family nursing process in the case example, as well as answers to the family vignettes and study questions. The family nursing example is included to give students a concrete model of family nursing practice and also an opportunity to retest themselves on the use of the Friedman Family Assessment Model and application of the family nursing process. Chapters in Part III describe the knowledge base needed to complete the family assessment and to develop family nursing diagnoses and intervention guidelines.

Near and dear to my heart's desires! Buy it!

This book is incredible to me. The reason I purchased it is because I am most interested in the psychological aspects of families and coping as they relate to nursing in general. I am currently searching for an area in which to pursue a Ph.D., and I feel this book is going to give me a lot of insight. It seems that some people who purchased this book previously had nothing but complaints, but I would think it was because they were required to purchase it for a class. As far as actual nursing PRACTICE after graduation, the book is not quite as pertinent as, say, a med-surg nursing book. But I would compare it to a psych nursing book or would definitely recommend it as a needed component of a pediatric or geriatric class along with another book that talks about the physiological aspects of nursing those populations. I truly am glad this book was written and am very happy to have found it on Amazon. I think it covers a very needed aspect of nursing that may too often be neglected in educating our nurses in school! LOVE IT!!!

Nursing Textbook

Predominant information is a review for me and unfortunately it needs to be rewritten so that it contains more current information in some areas. It is required reading for a class I'm teaching but with new concepts and expectations in my profession we need textbooks that are being updated more frequently to better represent the current requirements of our practice. It was in good condition when it arrived and very timely.
