Excellent Analyses of Ancient International Relations

Paul Collins has written an impeccable book, and its strength lies not only in its careful analytical summations of known ancient Near Eastern history but also especially in its attention to international relations in the time period from the Late Bronze Age to Neo-Babylon. Collins has done justice to what happened in Mesopotamia at the same time as in Egypt and how these regions reacted or responded to each other, with detailed critical understanding of the ebb and flow of power dynamics between these regions (when one was strong, the other usually weaker; when equally strong, a clash was inevitable in the Levantine buffer zone). While I agree with another reviewer that selective cultural highlights would make this book even better (e.g., Gilgamesh only receives a few sentences) - although also possibly making the book too long - this is not its stated historically purposed purview. While I also agree that integration of illustration and text or discussion of illustrations therein, adding to its excellent captions, might improve the book, its many beautiful and iconic images (in keeping with British Museum Press high standards) are lavishly ample and greatly representative of the cultures therein. I will certainly use the book in my next Stanford course on the Ancient Near East, and I hope a paperback edition is forthcoming for university students, for whom it will be the current definitive text.

An excellent historical overview

This book does an impressive job of pulling together the threads of the diverse histories of the ancient world into a coherent fabric that illustrates the relations of these kingdoms to one another. For many readers it will introduce peoples about whom they may know little or nothing, and show how their histories fit into the better known histories of lands such as Egypt and Greece. This book will be of interest to any who have studied any particular ancient civilization and wondered how it fits into the larger tapestry of ancient history.

I have only one small problem with this book (and it is a very small one): The author's insistence on using the term "Iraq" rather than "Mesopotamia" throughout his text. He explains it thus in his Preface: "The term Iraq (a name applied to the region of the modern country from at least the sixth century AD) is used in preference to the Greek term Mesopotamia which is becoming less meaningful for younger generations of readers." For someone like me, seeing "Iraq" used 2000 years too early in the context of Mesopotamia is both jarring and distracting. I also submit that avoiding the term "Mesopotamia" is not the best way to combat the trend of it "becoming less meaningful." However, as I said, it is a small point and does little to detract from the overall usefulness of this very useful work.

A Straightforward Political History

From Egypt To Babylon narrates the political history of the early Middle East and eastern Mediterranean from 1500 BC to 500 BC (roughly, from the Hittites to the Persians,) using the so-called Low Chronology for the earlier dates. The main focus of the book is on kingdoms and empires, major rulers, wars, alliances, and trade. Cultural matters, such as literature, art and religion, are mentioned, if at all, only in passing. The book does include captioned photographs of objects in the British Museum collection, but these are independent of the author's text.

In only 200 pages, many of them partly occupied by illustrations, it is hard for any author to do justice to a full millennium of Ancient Middle Eastern history. The result in this case is mostly a laundry list of kings and empires, but such frameworks are important; readers who would be satisfied with that, could certainly consider buying this book.

Almost a learning book. Definately should not be called a course.

I just received this book and opened it up. I was shocked to read a "Woodcarving Course" book that didn't really do much instructing at all. Half of the book is pictures, and mostly full page ones too. Most of those pictures don't really even give good project ideas.

Each "chapter" or section is one to three pages long on average, and just barely starts to give you an idea of the topic before moving on to something else. There wasn't even enough to get me more than barely interested in carving. This is less than a beginner's book. I would classify this as more of a coffee table book. (just eye candy, not for information).

Do yourself a favor and order "The Complete Book of Woodcarving" by Everett Ellenwood. It's produced by the same publisher, but had more information and knowledge than I could have hoped for on the subject. I ordered both of these books at the same time, and in comparing the two: should never have ordered Chris Pye's "Woodcarving Course and Reference Manual".

I give two stars because it's not completely void of useful information.

As good as a 2-dimensional woodcarving book gets!

This book gives a really good foundation with information about tools, types of wood, and different methods of carving, as well as projects & patterns to help you get started. Chris Pye is (in my opinion) an amazing craftsman and artist, and even if you don't carve, looking at the photos of his process and the finished pieces is a great experience. The only thing better would be if the book came with an instructional DVD of some kind, because it can be challenging to make sense of a 3-d or "in the round" project from written instructions and photos. I would absolutely recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about carving!

I've been carving for over 50 years and finally learned how to really sharpen tools with this book. Pye's technique guides are superb and this book is something every carver, at any level, should have.

POG, you will be missed

I began reading The Princess Diaries when I found the book at my sixth grade school book fair. Now, I am a freshman in college and I have read every PD book during those many years. This was a classic Princess book. Yes, it was predictable, but more importantly, it was heartwarming, which is the reason that I pick up Meg Cabot books in the first place. Mia and I have learned so much over the years, and now she gets her very own happy ending. I for one, could not be happier.

Redemption...somewhat.

After reading the last few books in the Princess Diaries series, I admit I was quiet annoyed with Meg Cabot. Though it was clear that Mia would be with Michael in the end - simply because Meg Cabot enjoys her happy endings, which is not necessarily a bad thing - I found the J.P. plot to be utterly frustrating. I admit, at the end of book 9, I was ready to pull my hair out.

I, of course, knew all along that J.P. was a snake. He flirted with Mia outrageously, even when she was with Michael...and the second she broke up with him, he was right there, "shaking his head" at those who were supposedly "flirting" with her...in other words, he took advantange of her when she was vulnernable. Let's face it: Mia's not the brightest bulb in the drawer when it comes to seeing what's in front of her.

Forever Princess, though predictable and somewhat frustrating at times, kept me on the edge of my seat. I recieved the book - after ordering it via Amazon, of course - at 4 this afternoon, and I finished it a little bit after 9. Even though I knew Mia would get her fairy tale ending, I just couldn't put the book down...I was at the point of NEEDING to know what happened, simply because we were left with a glimmer of suspense - and I say glimmer because it wasn't quite suspense, having already known that the couple was inevitable.

Mia matured a lot in this book. Did I still want to her smack her in the head at times? Yes, of course! It was clear that Michael loved her, and that J.P. did not...and that she had no feelings for J.P. - at least, not the kind that matter. The plot was a bit dragged out in this sense...Mia wonders endlessly whether or not Michael is the "One"...and in full-blown Mia style..."This couldn't be true! Of course it can't be true....could it?"

One thing I will bring up: while reading the Prom scene, I was suddenly reminded of another book, rather like indegestion; I know I'd read this somewhere before...a girl goes to the prom with a boy that she doesn't truly love, while the boy she does truly love is somewhere else...she even wins the title of Prom Queen, again paired with the boy she doesn't really like...

And then it hit me: Meg Cabot's Teen Idol. Very similar ending in that sense, and I was hoping for something a bit more original. This is redeemed by the fact that J.P.'s cover as a snake is fully blown, and I was glad to see him suffer.

So, all in all, I was happy with the conclusion to the series. It's been a long ride...I started reading these books when I was 11, and now I'm nearing 17. I'll definitely miss being in Mia's head, no matter how cluttered or annoying it was at times.

Forever Princess, the final book in the Princess Diaries series, is full of the same smart, independent, and fiercely passionate princess we've all known and loved, but with a bit more maturity and wisdom that has been a long time in coming. The fairy tale elements of the series that have sucked countless girls in are ever present in Forever Princess--the ball gowns and parties, hi-tech gadgets and name dropping to name a few. Throughout it all, Mia is kept down to earth by her flaws and outbursts and true-to-life emotions that readers can identify with. One of the main conflicts of the story is Mia's love life, and readers will root for her as she discovers what it means to truly be in a healthy and happy relationship, and fights for what she wants. Themes of courage, independence, and standing up for yourself are also evident, and Cabot presents them in a convincing style as Mia struggles with the decisions she must make, and her journey through high school and all of her experiences culminate, giving us a Mia who is strong and sure of herself. With a satisfying, optimistic, romantic, and slightly cheesy conclusion fit for a princess, Cabot ensures that Mia goes out with a bang.
