Canine Reproduction is a practical guide for veterinarians and an information source for breeders, kennel operators and others with a financial or humane interest in the breeding and maintenance of dogs.
The book focuses on the veterinarian’s responsibilities for managing the problem pregnancy, insemination, collecting, storing and shipping semen, and all of the diseases and vaccination protocols that may involve the bitch and the stud dog. It is also a very practical guide for the non veterinarian breeder and kennel owner. The book provides step by step guidelines for husbandry and nutrition as they relate to the bitch and her puppies, an excellent and concise description of breeding genetics and the implications of that knowledge for long term preservation of the breed line, and it focuses squarely on the relationship that must exist between the veterinarian and breeder clients.

Review
"This practical guide covers all aspects of canine reproduction in depth, from learning the breeder’s work to dealing with infertility. The eleven chapters take you into the world of dog breeding in a nicely illustrated journey while providing answers to many questions: Should I vaccinate my pregnant bitch? What drugs can be used? What is a normal delivery? How far should you go in treating sick neonates? Ready-made report sheets, a thorough list of medicines, clinical algorithms, and a detailed index are other useful features of this no-nonsense book."
―Vets Now: Book Review, October 2015
"This book provides a comprehensive description of clinical canine theriogenology from a practical and common-sense perspective. Clinical procedures are effectively detailed in step-by-step protocols. ... This book has many strengths including > 200 high-quality, colored photographs, which help readers appreciate the difference between normal and abnormal reproductive conditions. The 51 well-organized appendices provide concise information in the form of algorithms, lists, tables, forms, and questionnaires that are useful for veterinarians, technical staff, and clients. An enormous benefit is that these helpful appendices are available digitally and can be downloaded, edited, and customized to meet individual needs."

A great addition to the libraries of the practicing vet and serious breeder
By Girl Nerd
I bought this book through the publisher rather than Amazon but I am compelled as a both a breeder and former editor of an award-winning national breed club magazine to write a review. The Greer book is like no other canine reproduction book that I have seen or read. As a breeder, I have often been frustrated by the lack of depth and detail in canine reproduction books targeting average breeders. While these general books cover the basics of breeding and whelping in narrative form, they are often dated and do not adequately answer deeper questions involving both knowledge and technique. They are great introductions but if you need something deeper for an emergency, they don't provide it. Similarly, academic text books on reproduction or veterinary pediatrics (e.g., Johnston, Root-Kustriz, & Olson; Feldman & Nelson; Hoskins) are long on information (indeed excellent) but short on procedural step-by-step descriptions for the practicing vet or breeder. While the Greer book clearly targets practicing veterinarians and vet tech staffs, it offers plenty not found elsewhere to the serious breeder who is willing to read for a deeper understanding of clinical and scientific aspects of canine reproduction, from the preparation for breeding to diagnosing and treating infertility in stud dogs and bitches or problems in neonates. I see Greer's book as occupying a space between the more theoretical academic text and the basic general breeder book, a space that until now was largely empty.
What I find particularly useful over other alternatives is Greer's focus on how to execute various veterinary procedures (e.g., details on safely tube feeding a neonate; alternative insemination techniques). Greer offers a deeper discussion of both the issues in breeding and treatments or corrective measures. Furthermore, she combines both traditional veterinary science and alternative approaches that are derived from her empirical observation in canine obstetrics and experience in canine semen bank operation. The various appendices are also quite helpful.
If I had had the Greer book earlier, I probably would not have invested in many of the more technical (and expensive) academic veterinary theriogenology, pediatric, and drug reference texts that I own now. Likewise, my collection of general breeder books (most of which show their age although they are still being sold) would be much smaller. My use of the Greer book will be primarily as a direct reference for addressing and preventing reproductive problems as well as to help me improve the quality of my discussions with my reproductive specialist. Topics are easy to find quickly so it lends itself to use as a reference text in emergencies as well. My theriogenolgist lives nearly 3 hours away from me in another state. To offer myself and my prospective litters a form of insurance for local emergencies, I intend to give my local general veterinary practice a copy of Greer's practical, authoritative, and up to date book. While pricey (but worth it), the Greer book is a great resource for both vets and serious breeders.

Excellent reference!
By lholbrook
Excellent reference book, loaded with very thorough information. This book is a valuable addition to any library....breeder, owner or veterinarian/veterinary staff. The only thing I disagreed with was the blanket statement that breeders use limited registration for dogs that are not breeding quality...most breeders I know use limited to make sure appropriate health clearances are done before they will change the registration to full and allow breeding. It has little to do with the quality of the dog....just a way to make sure the lines are bred forward responsibly.

Quite simply, the best!
By Peri
I think that the previous reviewer who says that Dr. Greer's book fills the space between books geared toward the dog-oriented public and veterinary texts on reproduction is right on the mark. It is true, there was nothing in this particular niche for the serious breeder. And it is my opinion that nothing else is needed. Dr. Greer's book is logically organized, very well illustrated and covers the things that so many of us have been learning piecemeal from various vets and seminars over years and years of trial and error. I am not sure how we survived so long without it! The end!
